The idea is to offer a kind of home dry-cleaning when regular washing is unsuitable, although at around US$2,500, this thing ain’t for cheapskates. There’s also an internal shelf for delicate gear that can’t be tumbled around a drum.
The ozone has other uses too — it also disinfects the water used in rinsing clothes after a normal wash, allowing it to be used in the drying cycle, which eliminates the need for additional water. Sanyo has a progressive ‘green’ policy called ‘Think Gaia’ in case you’re wondering. Mind you, the press release for the Aqua has a kind 1950s ring to it, citing the machine as being convenient ‘for women of average height.’ Oops.

It is also worth noting that most machine that claim to be detergentless require heavy pre-treatments or soaking clothes for sometime before washing.
