Just a few weeks ago we heard about Whirlpool exiting Russia; not really a huge surprise given what’s going on just now but this, this is a shocker. Rumours abound that they are to leave the EU! Completely!

When first we heard this (thanks to the Rumour Mill), most of us thought, “Na, no way..” Well, turns out that there may well be fire to go along with this smoke.

By way of a few sources now the scuttlebutt is that it is indeed true and that Whirlpool are looking to pack it in across the EMAE entirely so, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. That’s a lot of market to surrender and, given the resources that Whirlpool have poured into it for the past few decades, a lot of investment as well.

That means that brands like Hotpoint, Indesit, Bauknecht, Creda, and a bunch of others are all on tenterhooks to see what their eventual fate might be.

From what we can glean Whirlpool are citing the war in Ukraine, the decline in sales and basically, shareholders losing interest in the EMAE region as a market.

Assuming that all this is correct and going to come to pass the question then becomes, who buys it? Is it sold as one or split up? Will the authorities allow the sale? So many questions to be asked and it’s extremely unlikely we’re going to get any answers for quite some time.

Thus far the names being bandied about are probably obvious to industry watchers with Hisense, Galanz, Arcelik (Beko) and Midea all being mentioned.

Hisense, they not long ago bought Gorenje so whether they’d want it lock stock we don’t know.

Similarly, Haier bought Candy so Hoover et all and they’re busy with that we’d think.

You never know but those two are occupied with what they have going on already.

Galanz, we don’t know as they are largely an OEM supplier for the EU, whether they have the financial power or even want to get involved is unknown.

Arcelik or Beko as we know them here, may well go for it but they have a huge market share already, adding the portfolio of brands by Whirlpool on top may well trip the EU competitions people to wake up and take a long hard look at any deal.

As we said, lots of questions that have no answers. Yet.

In the end, for the time being, nobody even knows if this will happen but, if it does, it will see one of the biggest shake-ups the appliance industry has ever seen in Europe and the repercussions will be huge.

  1. HooverCandy is owned by Chinese Haier, not Midea.

Whirlpool already sold the Turkish Indesit factory to Beko in 2021.

Most Indesit fridge freezers are currently Beko produced from the old Indesit Turkish factory they sold, and some are Vestel too.

Whirlpool has had a long relationship with Turkish Vestel already.

I would expect either Vestel or Beko to take over as Whirlpool already has a relationship there.

Appliances will soon be an entirely Turkish and Chinese industry.

Even some Bosch models are already rebadged Hisense products.

    Liebherr still producing everything themselves.

  2. Haier own Candy/Hoover. Midea might get free pass to get Whirlpool’s EMEA operations. I don’t see any of big groups getting the operations due to competition rules unless the brands and/or operations are broken up and sold off individually.
