Whirlpool just can’t seem to catch a break just now, first it was the tumble dryers now it’s microwaves in the USA that are being flagged up as potentially dangerous.
Don’t panic if you’ve got a UK Whirlpool microwave as, far as we know, they are not affected by this safety notice.
Whirlpool is recalling the microwaves due to a fire risk and they reckon that there’s more than 15,000 microwave-oven hood combinations in the field.
Whirlpool says electrical arcing while the microwave is in use can set a plastic component inside the microwave on fire. So, if you have one, don’t use it!
Whirlpool received five reports, including a house fire and two fires involving surrounding cabinetry.
The microwave ovens were sold throughout the USA between January 2014 and April 2016 at Best Buy, HH Gregg, Lowes, Sears, and other retail stores and by homebuilders also.
They are stainless steel, black or white. See below for model and serial numbers, which can be found inside the microwave, above the oven cavity as shown in the image below.
Owners should stop using the microwave and unplug it, then contact Whirlpool for a free replacement. Go online to http://repair.whirlpoolcorp.com or call toll-free 1-800-990-6254 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Central.
