Whirlpool has announced it’s cutting about 400 jobs, eliminating a third shift at the Fort Smith plant, in conjunction with lowered demand for the product that shift produces.
Officials would not elaborate as to what that product is; however, the layoff is voluntary. Of the 4,600 employees who work at the Hometown plant, the ones who have seniority get first shot at volunteering for the layoff.
Under the guidelines of the layoff, employees would take off for eight weeks. Meanwhile, they would be allowed to collect unemployment and health benefits.
Whirlpool officials said they would hire the employees back if needed. They acknowledged that demand for the product could increase.
