Whirlpool, the home appliance maker that is buying smaller rival Maytag, reported a 30 percent jump in its fourth-quarter profit Thursday on strong product pricing and lower taxes.

The company posted a profit of $126 million, or $1.83 per share, up from $97 million, or $1.44 per share, in the fourth quarter of 2004. Sales in the quarter rose to $3.95 billion from $3.63 billion a year earlier.

Shares of Whirlpool rose $5.89 to close at $86.37.
