One of the few remaining British appliance brands is, well, no longer a British appliance brand as it’s been bought by the Turkish behemoth that is Vestel.

It’s reported that, according to a company statement on October 28th a deal was struck with Crosslee PLC who own the White Knight brand to help Vestel get a foothold in new markets while strengthening its presence in Europe and the UK. Quite why as they already own the Servis, Sharp and Electra brands among others is anyone’s guess. We suspect a bargain price amid the pandemic but, that’s just us guessing.

The deal was reported as being for the acquisition of the Hostess and White Knight business trademarks, intellectual property rights, domain names, and some equipment related to these trademarks.

The registration process for the trademark transfer is being completed in the EU while the process continues in some non-EU countries.

But, that’s yet another British brand that’s gone.

  1. A friend’s mother’s Servis washing machine purchased in the 1970s lasted fifty years – half a century.

My Hotpoint Aquarius lasted fifteen years. My Bosch after that lasted six years and my replacement Beko is already playing up after six months. I am not mistreating my washing machines, I am a moderate user.

Reading other people’s reviews online it seems that my experience is becoming increasingly common. People are throwing away machines after two years because their warranty has expired and the cost of repair almost matches the cost of buying a new machine. Somewhere there are huge landfill sites growing taller and taller, that match the exploitation of customers.

This disposable decadence is a global disgrace – but the Greens are looking away.

I could not agree with you more and the second half is spot on too.
For many years I think the Greens have lost the actual plot and have morphed into a paler shadow of which once was the Ecology Party and before that The Peoples Party.
The sooner we get away from the wonders of retail sales and especially online retail sales which just do what they do: increase the sales of yet more crap no one really actually needs the better but I more than suspect no chance of that actually changing – the public are in my view their own worst enemy and the whole sphere of retail and manufacturers just play on it as you would expect. shifting over to reasonable well made rebuildable simple machines preferably without the electronic circuit boards or at least ecb`s with decent component parts rather than doing a Dell or Apple special or indeed a whirlpool special: a screw driver tool at 75 quid to dismantle a toaster!
