A Worcestershire man has invented an “extending” washing machine which he says will cope with twice the load.

Chris Piponides said the drum and front of the machine “extend telescopically” so it only requires an extra foot of floor space when in use.

He worked with Wolverhampton University researchers to draw up designs after winning an innovation award.

Mr Piponides, of Wythall, is now looking for a manufacturer to help with the prototype and production.

He says the new washing machine would help save people time and money and would also be better for the environment as it saved on energy.

“The idea came from my dear wife struggling with too many loads of washing,” he said.

“I thought ‘why not have an expanding washing machine so you can increase the capacity by up to double?'”

He said the expanding drum also meant larger items such as duvets could be washed.

We’re sure we’ve seen this idea before and, it didn’t work sadly.
