A couple who claimed an allegedly faulty Zanussi dishwasher was the source of a fire which destroyed their home have settled their High Court action against Electrolux. The case was over the loss of their home contents in the fire.

They claimed Electrolux was negligent in the supply of a Zanussi dishwasher which, they alleged, had been installed and operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Tomas and Paula O’Ceallaigh, Corlummin, Foxford, Co Mayo, had sued Electrolux Group Ireland Ltd over the fire at their former home in Strokestown, Co Roscommon, in 2005. They claimed €109,641 for loss of contents over and above the €40,000 for contents covered by insurance. The damage to the house was covered by insurance.

The case against Electrolux, which had denied the claims against it, was due to begin on 27th January 2011 before the President of the High Court, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns.

After talks between the sides, the judge was told the matter had been settled. At the request of counsel, the judge struck out the proceedings, with costs in favour of the O’Ceallaighs. No details of the settlement were given.

  1. I have recently had a fire breakout inside my Baumatic dishwasher. Bought it from Empire Direct. Had it fitted by private builders. lasted me over 3 years and then all of a sudden i switched it on and started feeding baby in front of it. Smoke began to come out of it after it had been switched on for 10 minutes, looking back the water sound was not apparent this time i switched it on. I r3eckon it was an electrical fault within the machine itself anyway, i saw smoke, opened the dishwasher door and saw flames. Called firebrigade…..the brigade said fire was contained.Just wanted to know where we stand with Baumatic themselves? How do we get them to pay compensation for the machine and the nightmares and insomnia ive been getting since the event. The Baumatic engineer/inspector is coming to check it out next week. Just wanted to also know what obstacles i will come across fighting my case myself.
