Consumers are being warned about Finish PowerBall tablets.
A number of dishwashers have been damaged because of the tablets over-foaming, which causes a switch in some dishwashers to be turned off.
The problem requires a technician to reset the equipment.
Consumers Institute chief executive David Russell says the manufacturer, Reckitt Benckiser, should take responsibility and issue a warning on packets about the problem.
He says it is a matter of letting people know which machines the product works well with and which it does not.
Anyone who has been been affected by the problem should call the company to plead their case for compensation.
