Maytag Corp. is recalling about 201,540 dishwashers sold in Canada between July 1997 and June 2001 because of a fault that could lead to a fire.

The appliances are among about 2.3 million dishwashers being recalled across North America.

The problem is a potential leak of rinse fluid that can be added to a special compartment on the inside of the machine’s door. The fluid can come in contact with the machine’s internal wiring, which can short circuit and possibly catch fire.

So far, Maytag has received 135 reports of dishwasher fires across the continent and four injuries. One incident was reported in Canada.

The recall involves Maytag and Jenn-Air under-the-counter or portable plastic tub dishwashers. The dishwashers have black, white, almond, bisque and stainless-steel front panels. They were sold for between $399 and $999 at department and appliance stores, as well as by homebuilders across the country.

Model and serial numbers are printed on a label on the dishwasher’s plastic frame ontop of or to the left of the door opening.

Contact Maytag toll-free at 1-800-675-0535 or visit the firm’s website to determine if a dishwasherhas been recalled.

The company advises people to stop using the dishwashers immediately and disconnect the power supply. Maytag is offering a free in-home repair or a $75 rebate on the purchase of a new Maytag, Jenn-Air, KitchenAid or Whirlpool dishwasher.
