Participantfound out recently you can reset tocs for hotpoint condenser by holding firmly between finger and thum and bang it down on bi metalic side, works a treat, obviously handy in some circumstances,

Great idea but not that profitable I would say.

If it’s tripped, it’s done its job. If it’s reset, it will be out of calibration and therefore not safe.

its a bi metalic disc how can it be out of calibration ? also the toc that trips is always the left hand one usually because the customer has either opened the door b4 the cool down period or not cleaned the filters etc, or the motor action has failed due to a faulty capacitor etc. the advantage being you dont have to replace the toc with a new set again in a call back situation or a rental situation

Because one is a cycling stat and is designed to do just that – flex back and forth to control the temperature. The other is not.
When you tell the judge “I only reset the one-shot three times before it burnt the house down”, I hope you feel secure in a job well done.
You can buy a pattern set for £3, or £5.50 for gen – why take a chance on a safety issue?

ParticipantRe: reset one shot toc
I have reset them in the past but only if I have none with me, but you should always change them they only trip for a reason.
But saying that I reset the one on my creda dryer about 2 years ago and not since.
Think of it this way nice easy repair and a very small lay out on parts = HAPPY CUSTOMER 😀

If there is one thing i will NOT take any chances with in appliances its monkeying around with thermal overload protection in any way..
simply aint worth it. 🙁

Participanthear hear!!!
i would never reset a toc.. find the fault, repair it, and change the stats as a kit
the customer will not thank you for burning their £300,000 home down

Not as bad as Hotpoint putting 2 cycle stats in the kit instead of a cut out.
Who’s fault is that when it burns the house down.Dave

iv never heard of a late type hotpoint dryer setting on fire for one thing the cabinet is all metal and the drum is also not like the old plastic drum models as i said before the usual cause of toc tripping is customer turning off without allowing cool down or overloading / not cleaning filters

I can’t believe the number of times this subject comes up.
Resetting a non-resettable TOC is total madness. Nobody here would short out a fuse in a plug! What’s the difference?
It’s engineers that do these practices that give this industry a bad name.
Rant over!

ParticipantI called to a house once to look at a washing machine. They said they had a hotpoint condensor dryer that they didn’t want as they got new stuff in the house so i took it. They said it was working but the clothes were getting a little hot. When i opened it the one shot stat had wire bridged over the terminals! Some electrician guy did a repair on it 2 years previously.
