ParticipantHi,
Thanks to the advice of the members here, I’ve managed to save loads of cash (and grief from the Mrs!). Thanks for the excellent advice!
However, my tumble dryer has just developed a fault today whereby the machine turns on but nothing happens – the drum just won’t turn. Over the past few days and weeks the machine has made a terrible grinding and squealing noise and finally today it’s stopped working altogether.
I suspect that this may be a bearing issue but I really don’t know. Please help – the dryer is essential to my large household and today is washing day!
Thanks in advance.
Ben

ParticipantOK, just pulled the dryer out and the problem actually seems to be a little more than the bearings. With the lid off I can see that the drum is not turning although the belt seems tight. I have also noticed that water is leaking out of the corner of the unit (the opposite side to the condenser collection thingy) and I am suspecting that water may have gone through the motor ( 😡 ).
Does anyone know how I can get to the space under the drum to check? I also need to figure out where the water is coming from too. I cannot figure out how to get the sides, back or base off the unit so I’m a little stuck… Actually, I’m a lot stuck.

Participantand what a pig to work on these things are
acces is by taking the front off
screws along top, bottom and inside of door
make a note of the wires before you do anythingnot a nice job, is it just humming?
October 25, 2008 at 5:21 pm #266533m0nkeyb0y
ParticipantYep just a hum from the timing unit at the top. I might be imagining it since I found the water, but it could be making a funny smell too…

Participantwell
it could just be the capacitor
carefully, set the dryer going, and give the drum a push to see if it starts to tumble
it could be a timer fault
be very careful though, dont want you hurting yourself.. steer clear off all wires

ParticipantNope, pushing the drum achieves nothing. It’s really, really stiff and if I can get the drum to move, it just slips under the belt.
Looks like I know what I’ll be doing tomorrow afternoon now… 🙁

ParticipantHmmm…this is sounding like fun. How many hours should I set aside?
And what is the plastic support? I didnt see one when I looked in the top. Do I need to take the front off as well?

ParticipantPants. I thought you were going to say that… 🙁

ParticipantWell, I managed to dismantle everything (there is only a tiny bit of plastic housing and the motor left!) and sure enough, the pulley wheels are knackered (one of them has burnt right through the support and the spindle of the snapped completely as I was removing them).
As for the source of the leak, it looks like it may have come from somewhere else in the kitchen and been absorbed by the vast amount of fluff inside the machine. Looks like it’s time to check the kitchen waste pipes again too 😡
So from whence does one purchase replacement pulley wheels?
