The Welsh Assembly Government has launched a £1.75m scheme for environmentally-sound fridge disposal. The funding will help local authorities to meet European Commission requirements for CFC and coolant waste management.

“It is vital that old fridges are disposed of safely, and the EC Regulation ensures that ozone-depleting substances are not released from them,” said Minister for the Environment Carwyn Jones in announcing the fund. “It is expected that this year over 100,000 domestic fridges will be produced by the public and this extra money from the Assembly will be a great help towards the extra costs that proper fridge disposal creates for local authorities,” he added.

The funding will also be backed by a guidance and information programme on the issue of fridge decommissioning and safe storage. Infrastructure for domestic fridge decommissioning has been in place for Wales since January 2002.
