ParticipantHas anyone tried the new Persil ‘Small and Mighty’ and what is different about the new formula? More concentrated or more enzymes? I currently using the Colour one before the 3 x version was launched.

Same old yucky liquid with a new eye catching name testing the gullibility factor of the buying public I shouldn’t wonder. Might do what it says on the bottle but wouldn’t use liquids in my machine ever!

Can I ask why you would never use liquids? Really would value your advice as always used liquids for colour washes and powder for whites.

Am having real problems with rinsing in my Bosch WAE2465GB Classic Vario Perfect and wondered if it was down to using liquids? Doesn’t matter how many rinses I give it the damn thing just will not pump the suds away. The water drains but the suds just don’t go away. I have looked for blockages but non in the sump or pump. However if I put soda crystals or caustic soda down the grey drain hose I get all black mouldy gunge come out. I have already done this procedure once and rinsing was back to normal, surely the liquids haven’t gunged the pipes again?

Do you ever do a really hot wash with full-on powder ?
I use liquid detergent/quick wash for some very lightly soiled stuff – just to freshen it really, and either 30 degrees or even cold sometimes. It is very easy to over-dose if you are pouring it into a dispensing ball, and the water here is very soft, so a) have to be careful how much to use and b) always select the extra rinse option when using it.
Had several machines over the years using the same sort of regime, and never had any problem with smelly machines or blocked pipes.
However, the machine does at least one 60 degree wash with Ariel powder every week, and often a 95 degree one too. Always leave the door and dispenser wide open after any wash. I don’t think liquid detergents are bad per se, provided they are used properly, and the machine gets a regular workout with a good hot blast of powder with bleach in it.
It could just be your usage pattern perhaps ?

Because of the reasons you later touched on with your Bosch problems. Powder is less invasive overall and a better choice especially in hard water areas. Your Bosch will have surfactant (grey gunge) build-up blocking the corrugated grey outlet hose. In effect, arterial blockage restricting the outflow for the drain pump. The only full and complete solution is to remove the pump, sump hose and the whole drain hose system and clean it thoroughly. Then use detergent powder in correct quantities on the correct cycle for each fabric and a monthly 90 degree service wash in between.
(Just doing a service wash at this point will only compound the problem by the way)
Problem solved?

@ Keepitsimple I do use the liquids properly but I do not put as much as the Manufacturers say, they tell you to use more so you buy more soap quicker. I do not trust them one bit.
Regarding usage I use 25ml for normal soil of Ariel excel gel for colours and that is enough otherwise I have loads of foam. I live in Suffolk so the water here is hard but I actually think the water company has added something to the water supply as the water is nowhere near as hard as it used to be.
The machine was rinsing properly last week as I could see all the water droplets on the door glass now there are none. I have just used the liquid about 5 times since the last 60C maintenance wash. Could the liquid of built up after just 5 washes at 40C?
I was wondering if the way the drain hose is attached on modern Bosch’s if that was the problem? They come up through the back of the unit as opposed to the base.

@ Martin I have already taken the pump out myself and can see no blockages. Regarding the sump hose is that easy to sort out myself?

If you managed the pump then I can’t imagine you would not have a problem with the sump hose. However, can I suggest you concentrate on the pump OUTLET hose instead. That will likely be well crudded up! 😀

Would putting something like Steredent tablets or soda crystals help dislodge the gunge?
Other than lack of bleach, why do liquids leave residue behind? I would of thought they rinse away easily seeing as they are soluble already.

My usage pattern is a bit different from yours – I never really thought too much about it before, but it’s about equal numbers of cold/40/60 washes and about half as many 95 washes – just based on the stuff that gets laundered. I normally get whatever big box powder is going cheap at Makro, and the liquid is generally Aldi. Currently Ariel powder (the commecial stuff that reckons to disinfect at 40 degrees, as it was on special offer) but otherwise generally Daz. Honestly can’t tell much difference except that Daz tends to clump a bit.
What I don’t do is use much fabric conditioner – only a very small amount.
If you go online to your water company and quote your postcode they will give you an analysis including hardness, but unless it is extremely soft, I wouldn’t think that was a problem. (hardness here is 3 degrees Clark, which is pretty soft).
I have a different machine from you. Can you do additional rinses ? (My machine has a plastic outer drum by the way, which are reckoned by them in the know on here to be much more prone to these sorts of problems).
hope you get it sorted out and it isn’t too unpleasant a job :eeek:
Anyway, it won’t put me off using liquid detergents the way I use them.

@ Keepitsimple My water is 23.525 Degrees Clark.
My machine does extra rinse but only one.
Even in hard water though modern detergents create too much foam even with correct dosage.
Ill give you a guideline:
on the box of Ariel powder i have it suggests 165ml for normal soiling and if i used that amount clothes would come out like cardboard! Not to mention foam and my Bosch hates foamy detergents and i have complained to Ariel about the poor quality anti foaming agents but they are not interested as usual. It really is infuriating when no one listens to you. I will use Persil instead.
