A long time customer of mine has serious doubts.
She replaced her 15 year old Hotpoint washer less than six years ago with a new Bosch appliance. After around 30 months of use I called to a no spin fault and found the brushes worn, however it had blown the motor TOC and the main PCB. Fast forward to today and I get a call to say her latest machine is tripping the rcd. Yes, it’s another Bosch and the main motor is down to earth. :rolls:
To say she is unimpressed with Bosch equipment is an understatement. I’m just glad I didn’t advise her to buy the second one. 🙁

Nothing today is what it was yesterday. Clearly Jim’s customer flogs the living day lights out of her machines and as such 30 months is the best most makes can endure these days.
I would still recommend Bosch at the price point they are marketing their stuff these says over the likes of Zanussi and Candy. What users do to them after is of no surprise to me.
What do you recommend as someone in the trade without at some point it comes back to bite you? ISE was a dream turned ruddy nightmare leaving nothing to fall back on in order to leave reputations intact. So what we are now left with is a future of ‘disposable’ white goods that survive the guarantee period and to a point just beyond “reasonable wear and tear’. Their economic fixability less than 50/50 but massive volumes sufficient to prop up the ailing repair trade.
It ain’t what it used to be, never was, never will be. Though what has changed meanwhile is that the manufacturers are flogging more of them now than ever before. Every other house in any street has a dishwasher and a fridge freezer. Many of those same households are on their second or third generation washing machine. Such is life in 2015 and today is tomorrow’s yesterday.

Depends on who I’m asked by.
A lot of my work is student lets and the landlords are happy to buy cheap beko’s etc and replace them every other year.
As a rule to others I will normally say Bosch but it’s up to them to do a bit of homework on models etc, as I don’t sell I also tell them to get advice from local retailersRe: Bosch better than Hotpoint, ‘Really’ ?????
2.5 years to wear out Bosch motor brushes I have only seen once, by a family of 6 adults. The typical lifespan is between 4 and 12 years, depending on use.
She hadn’t by any chance used the dreaded “reset procedure” for these Bosch machines? I have come across a few motor failures on more recent cheaper Bosch machines, but as far as I can recall, in each case the customer had searched the internet and followed one of the numerous “helpful” postings explaining how to reset the F21 or corresponding flashing lights fault code.
These machines are designed to lock out the motor at the first hint of any arcing from the motor and unfortunately owners are over-riding this protection by resetting the fault code and consequently inadvertently damaging their machines, sometimes beyond economic repair.

Knowing this customer very well indeed I would say the chances of her or anyone else in the house doing a reset are virtually nil.
The machine is well used but so was the old Hotpoint she got 15 years from.

I bet even that old timer broke down every 30 months or so in its 15 yrs. Their regular failure rates and ultimate “fixability” meant Hotpoint was a trade favourite, likewise so we’re Bosch. Not so these days. Bosch have gone the way of the rest whilst Hotpoint were there years before. A triumph of modern technology, not, but genius mass marketing strategy they truly have become.

When I get a call for a Bosch washing machine repair I have a quite high success rate the exception being the WAA’s (the Spanish Bosch) with many broken drum spiders. Mostly simple faults ie brushes,pumps and door boots. However with Hotpoint the success rate is getting less and less, more intermittent faults-wasting time waiting for machines to go wrong and knowing full well if you leave you will be getting a call back. The ‘super silents’ seem worse displaying no error codes, the electronics are dire, the sealed drums have rubbish bearings. The build quality of the latest Bosch machines may be poorer than earlier machines but Hotpoint are rapidly becoming a lost cause.

No one is more critical of the quality of current Indesit appliances, my tongue was firmly in cheek when first posting but it is getting much harder to recommend anything even mid range these days.
Surely Bosch don’t use cheaper motors in their basic machines. I still fail to understand why so few manufacturers don’t use fast blow fuses as Hotpoint used to do on their pcbs.Re: Bosch better than Hotpoint, ‘Really’ ?????
That’s the situation I regularly come across with bosch motors being shorted and proves too expensive to replace. It seems to me that 1 in 5 machines that does it.
The. i get asked which do I recommend, Hotpoint or Bosch. I say Bosch most times cos of 2 years guarantee but I have a sneaky feeling that these machines self destruct few months after the end of 2 years guarantee.
