ParticipantA customer of mine had a faulty Neff washer dryer which I fixed it. She took me for a small walk from her kitchen to the garage which is across a small carpark, there was a John Lewis tumble dryer, says only used it twice and finding a nuisance carrying damp washing across the carpark. Says there’s no space to put the dryer in her house, it’s common for new builds. Her late husband bought the dryer for her three years ago.
She wants to sell it but didn’t know how to as she’s not computer savvy. I bought it off her to help her out, took the dryer home with me. Unloaded into the house, it was very heavy to shift. I thought blooming heck that dryer nearly broke my back. I googled the model number and it came up as heat pump dryer. I had no idea that I acquired an high end dryer for so little money (i thought it was just a standard condensing dryer). Nevertheless I shifted the Hoover Condensing dryer and kept the heat pump dryer for my family. I must say that it’s really good on drying the clothes but it takes 2 and a half hours! Mustn’t grumble, think of the leccy bill…

My vented takes 60 mins for a full load of towels. I figure the leccy a lot cheaper for the shorter period and wear and tear far far less. Heat pump dryers are a nonsense, a con, technological, illogical c r a p.

Excuse my ignorance , but what is a heat pump dryer.
Never come across one yet.
Living out here in the outback (suffolk), we only just got leccy. :innocent:

HEATUMP – basically a fridge compressor instead of a heater – pile of nonsense as martin says – they take about 30 mins to get up to about 20 degrees .
eco friendly but useless as a dryer — we have a spare base unit of one which has the whole shooting match attached – i was thinking of making some sort of Frankenstein heater for the workshop when i get bored .

Point taken guys, but for me, I think I will see what’s the fuss is about and make my own judgment on it.
I see it as an opportunity to have a look inside and learn how to fix it IF it breaks down. At the end of the day it didn’t cost me much to buy it.

Hey, if you get one cheap or free.. no harm, no foul.
Just that many people don’t have a clue what they are much less anything else.

The above comments showed that customers don’t realise what they have got especially when the husband bought it. Being a man, he can’t help wanting the all singing and dancing latest gadgets, you only have to blame the Gadgets show.
I sense that it’s a trap that most of us will fall into as the wife wouldn’t know the difference between heat pump and conventional tumble dryer. She may as well describe it as a white tumble dryer in the same manner as a blue or red car regardless of make and model.

The old Hotpoint 1700 series or the 95 series knock spots off any of the new driers they would dry a load in half an hour. The air coming out the back was like a gale force wind. Alright they only turned one way but there again was the reversair facility just really a marketing opportunity. Because these heat pump driers are on for longer times belts and bearings are going to wear out quicker(work for us especially if hotpoint do a version).

I think we will see more and more of these dryers as buyers become attracted to the A, A+, A++ and higher energy efficiency ratings they can achieve compared to at best B for conventional dryers. At least if marketers and retailers do their job properly.
They should be really good news for repairers as owners are less likely to throw them away when they break down. Ok, heat pump system faults may well push some of them beyond economic repair, but there will be plenty of the usual run of the mill items to sort out, such as belts, bearings, sensors and motor capacitors.

Been told that Whirlpool are stopping making vented dryers and will only produce heat pump dryers within the next twelve months
