    Hello,

Bit of a strange one this. The washing machine completes a wash cycle successfully when its empty. If we put a load in it the drum fails to rotate. I have taken the motor out and looked at the bushes. they were just above a generous inch and a half in length and looked ok. I cleaned the commutator ring whilst in there.

I have taken the load out and restarted the quick wash cycle whilst its empty and its rotating fine?
Where would the capacitor be to give the motor the extra push it might need under load if it has one?

    thanks

is there another component I need to be looking at to test?

there is only 2 things it can be

    the motor or
    the control board

brush motors do not have capacitors

does sound like a motor problem

thanks Dave I have taken the back cover off to observe. The motor is turning the belt is moving around but the silver central spindal is baggy and just gently rocking side to side as if its slipping. Like a record being held on a turnable slip mat. I am going to see if the fixing is loose.

well the only thing i can think of is the motor mount lugs on the drum have snapped

if thats the case its a wonder the motor has not fallen off

when you say the central spindle are you telking about the motor spindle or the drum pulley ?

the motor is working fine. it is like the steel drum is loose under load

    AH its scrap then

your drum is mounted on a spider which has 3 legs. As there legs corrode they snap and the drum goes out of true when it spins

    this is what its like

this one is an old Hotpoint unit but yours is probably a sealed tub and therefore not replaceable

there is a circular disc in the middle of the belt pulley with a star bit screw. this was loose. i tightened it up a bit by holding the drum still from the front. its working itself loose and i dont know whats behind it but if sounds like the sprocket teeth are worn or not engaging due to wear and tear. just getting by with a half load at the moment.

sounds like the pulley has gone

we need the long number beginning 3 from the label and i can get you a part no on the pulley

the pulley is on espares with a similar question regarding a pully bolt loosening. they replied “Check the bolt securing the pulley and the drum shaft has not been damaged stopping it from tightening.” i will get the part number requested thank you

can this puley bolt simply be unscrewed and removed without the drum dropping out of position?

yes pulley will not affect drum it cant move forward enough to fall out

still get me the number though in case there is more than 1 pulley

if the 3 number is as below
    31005184

then pulley part no should be 41024466

you can now do a google search

thanks Dave. i kept tightening the bolt and asked my misses to be a bit more conscious about the load weight. 4 washes in and it still behaving itself. my misses ordered a new washing machine as she is also fed up of slamming the door to get the magnet lock to engage and lock, i straighten the latch gently.

a theory question : how would the pulley wear to cause the bolt not grip and slip?

are we talking mechanical wear and tear of the bolt housing due to the rotational motion?

the washing machine is about 7 years old and i previously changed the heating element on a previous fault stated on here.

    thank you

    Tony
