The Blackburn Citizen reports that a pensioner said his fridge could ‘explode’ after receiving a letter from Beko informing him of a fault.

Beko fridge freezer recall

Grandfather Eddie Duxbury, 80, received a letter from Beko telling him his fridge freezer had a faulty component prone to overheating.

The problem affects more than 30 of the company’s models issued between January 2000 and October 2006. A Beko engineer is to visit Mr Duxbury at his home  to fix it.

“It is just a disgrace because we’ve had this fridge for years and all that time it has been dangerous. Now we’re worried that it’ll blow up.” he said.

A Beko plc spokesperson told the newspaper: “Certain models of frost-free fridge freezers may in some circumstances, fail and overheat.”

He also urged customers to call 0800 009 4837.

We have set up an information article which you can access from this link giving more information about the problem and this will be updated with new information as we receive it.

The official notice from Beko is as follows:

It has come to our attention that in a very small number of incidents, the defrost timer on a certain production range of BEKO frost free refrigeration can fail and overheat. We are seeking to contact owners of these products to carry out a free of charge modification to the defrost timer.

Quality and customer safety and satisfaction is paramount to Beko; all its products are independently tested before being placed on the market and meet all UK and European safety standards. The number of incidents to which these products have been potentially linked is extremely small, nevertheless, as a responsible manufacturer, we have decided to proactively contact the owners of these fridge freezers as we wish to make a free in-home modification to remove any potential risk with this component.

May we take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused, and to thank you for your time and cooperation.

The Beko frost free fridge freezer models affected were manufactured between January 2000 and October 2006. These have a serial number that begins with either 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 or 06. and this information can be found on a label inside the fridge. You should find the rating plate label, in most cases, stuck to the inner wall of the fridge on the left hand side once the salad or crisper drawer is removed.

An online checking facility to see if your model is affected can be found on Beko’s UK website and we have added a video from Beko that gives more information below.

Also on YouTube a video from a user showing the part that is being replaced has appeared that you will find below.

Please be aware that UK Whitegoods Limited is not Beko and we cannot offer much advice beyond that given in this news item or that is available on the Beko website (www.beko.co.uk).

We cannot book engineers to carry out the rectification required as we have no facility to do so.

We have contacted Beko UK for further advice and will publish any response that we receive in the next few days as well as a general update on the situation in respect to these fridge freezers.

At this time we will be unable to offer any further advice until we have a clearer indication of the situation from Beko UK.

  11. From site admin:Please note that we are not Beko, we do deal with Beko for spares but we do not represent the company in any official capacity beyond being an spares retailer. The information given above is all the information that we currently have on these fridge freezer fires and so far to our knowledge there has been no official comment from Beko. Should Beko comment we will of course publish the comments. In the meantime the only way we can reach Beko is through the numbers given above the same as anyone else can. Senior staff from Beko service do read the forums however and it is quite likely that any comments left there will be picked up by service management. RegardsSite Admin
