It seems that it’s another day, another product recall this past week. This time it’s Bosch’s turn who are recalling Bosch, Neff and Siemens branded dishwashers produced between 1999 and early 2005.

Bosch dishwasher fires

Bosch say that, “According to internationally recognised risk assessment methodology, which takes into account the likelihood of various factors that would contribute to a potential fire, the risk is deemed low.” However, anyone that has their kitchen or home going up in flames probably won’t agree so if you have an affected model please have it checked as soon as possible as Bosch do go onto to say that, “There is a possibility that a fire could break out in the control panel. If unattended, the fire could potentially apread beyond the dishwasher. If you have one of the affected models, please call the helpline at 0800 561 0082 or arrange a callback with BSH customer service immediately to schedule a free repair.”

So, low risk but don’t use it or it could burst into flames as several appear to have done already.

The official notice from Bosch read as follows:

BSH Home Appliances Limited has announced an in-home repair programme of certain dishwashers manufactured between 1999 and early 2005. The affected dishwashers are in the batch number range from FD 7901 to FD 8504.

Dishwashers which are outside the above batch number range are not affected.

To find out if your dishwasher is included in this repair action

  • Please enter the model number and batch number which can be found either engraved on the top or on a sticker on the left hand side of the inner part of the door

You can find the model and FD number as shown below on the rating plate of the dishwasher and the information can be entered on the Bosch Repair Action website from this link.

  1. i have a bosch classic slimline dishwasher purchased around 2 years ago. i am unable to locate the serial number could this be ones with the proble

  2. If it’s only two years old it shouldn’t be affected but you would need the information from the rating plate to be 100% sure.

  3. Why don’t you have a symbol for angry ?If you are going to set up a website, make sure that it will accept all relevant details, i.e. a house name where there is no house number. I’ve just wasted my time trying to book an appointment on the website and then having to make a ‘phone call because your website won’t accept a house name without a number.

  4. I had one of these, that did catch fire in the middle of the night in May. We are only alive because our dogs alerted us. By the time our smoke alarms went off it would have been too late because according to the fire brigade – it’s the wrong kind of smoke !! Yet it’s the most toxic. Bosch wont admit liability because it’s burnt beyond recognition and could be a different make for all they know – yet only today, I received a letter saying they think I may have an affected Bosch, stop using immediately and call for a free repair !!! It was obviously computer generated. Our whole lives are in tatters. We now don’t evenhave a home. Until it happens to you, you cannot explain the trauma and upset.

  5. This can be seen in action on You Tube, called “Dishwasher Problems” by Photonicinduction.

  6. Irene, you will barely be able to see the serial number as it is probably located just above the door handle on the inside top. Very hard to see. I have just booked an engineer online for this week as mine is one of the faulty ones. Last week it went bang – twice on plugging in and now doesnt work at all.

  7. Do not ignore this warning! Yesterday (18th July) our Bosch dishwasher control panel caught fire. If we had not been right there to put it out, we have no doubt it would have spread and burned our house down as it was placed under a wooden worksurface. Normally we put the machine on at night – all seven of us could easily have perished.

  8. Exactly the same happened to us as to Stephen Lee above but on the following day (Tuesday 19th July). We were going to bed and heard a pop, smoke out of the control panel and then fire. It was only by the time our four children were out of the house and the fire was blazing that the smoke alarm went off. This is so dangerous. Half an hour more we would have been asleep and I know that the fire would have been out of control by the time we would have worked out what was happening. People need to know of this recall – we had not been informed.

  9. I had a letter today saying I could be an owner of one of these recalled products, which is quite ironic as mine DID catch fire last week! I heard a loud pop which I initially thought was something falling over in the machine, but then started to smell a horrid plastic smell, went into the kitchen and there was black smoke coming out of the top by the control panel. I normally put the machine on and go to work, it was sheer luck that I was still at home otherwise I would dread to think what may have happened.

  10. Our Bosch Exxcel caught fire on the 27th July 2011 at 10:30 pm did not know of the recall until after the fire. Its destroyed our house! We had not been long in bead and were asleep when our smoke alarm woke me I looked over the staircase case and all I could see was orange in the kitchen. I woke my family up and we escaped through the upstairs back windown on to the roof then jumping and over in to my neighbours to escape we all out before the fire services arrived. SO SO LUCKY If it wern’t for the smoke alarm and a plan to get out would we be here now?

  11. We have one of these potentially dangerous dishwashers and notified Bosch, who sent a technician to repair it on 7th July. Since then, the dishwasher hasn’t worked, despite visits from two further technicians to fix a machine which worked perfectly until the Bosch technicians got hold of it. Five weeks later we are still waiting for Bosch to come up with a solution. Good products, but totally incompetent service technicians and shoddy, unhelpful service.

  12. We had a call today from Bosch to alert us to this issue. But it’s too late – about a month ago the damn thing exploded with a big bang and a lot of smoke. I was in the kitchen at the time. We have a RCD and the current to the kitchen was shut off and there was no fire. I put it outside the house and within 15 mins it was scavenged and is probably in bits in Poland now. We bought a Miele, which washes well but doesn’t stack stuff as well. I will try Bosch customer service and see if they can offer some compensation as this was a major expense we were not expecting.

  13. well after finding out our dishwasher is one that has been affected i have been on the phone twice and they can not send a repair man out as there are none in our area, where does that leave us now, phoned again on thursday and was told someone would call us and its monday evening now and have heard nothing. bosh have no customer care as far as i am concerned. very poor.

  14. last friday an engineer came and ‘replaced the brain’ of my lovely reliable dishwasher, classified as a fire hazard.. Ever since, its digital time dial has gone haywire and it won’t let in water. In short, it’s become unusable. Help!!

  15. Hi Barbera,You should call back Bosch as, if it is what we call a recall then it should be repaired free of charge for you by Bosch.Regards

  16. Well on the +ve side, we have a dishwasher in the series. Emailed Bosch, immediate response, technician called within the week – excellent replacement of part with no hassle. Full marks to whoever was subcontacted by Bosch to carry out the work.

  17. We had a house fire in March 2011 caused by Bosch dishwasher, received recall notice in August.Had to move out for 4 months total cost in excess of £100K am planning to recover our uninsured losses and would like to get in touch with others who have had same experience. I have already contacted a person in London who had the same issue.

  18. We found the Bosch warning letter waiting for us when we returned from holiday. Use the website for an immediate appointment, it said. We did: the website displayed all of September and October. Every day was greyed out and unavailable. No other month was listed. Not to worry; the letter said the phone line was open 0700-2200 Mon-Fri and 0800-2000 Saturday and Sunday. It was 1925 on Sunday, so I phoned them: “our offices are now closed; we are open 0800-2000 Mon-Fri and 0800-1700 Saturday and Sunday. Please call then”. So the website and Bosch’s promise of an immediate appointment are garbage and the phone line is not open for the hours they state (on both sides of their letter). This is fake action and concern from a major manufacturer, misleading customers and the statutory consumer protection bodies, over a fault that will kill and destroy. That machine stays off and I’ll never buy Bosch again, having bought two more appliances from them shortly before this story broke.

  19. We have one of these BOSCH dishwashers and are horrified to read the stories of some of these poor people who’s houses burnt down. We got a warning letter – and arranged a day off work when they were sending a service engineer. He did not come so we rang the service centre and the operator said ‘oh well – a tree might have fallen on him’ – so we made another appointment for a month or so later. This time the service engineer came but becuase ours does not have a 3 pin plug on it but instead is fed from a switch on the wall (the switch is exactly the same as one on a plug socket its just hard wired in) – he said he could not do the repair as another department deals with that type of switch! (you only have to switch it off!!) Service department did not ring us back having promised to… So ours is still dangerous….we have therefore decided to just get rid of it and get a different dishwasher as its just not worth the risk! Not happy with the company’s attitude at all – tw

  20. Luckily my Bosch dishwasher died a few years back and was disposed of, but a little investigation on the net shows an interesting fact. This same problem was the subject of a U.S product recall in JAN 2009. So the UK owners have had to sit with a fire risk in their kitchens for more than 2 1/2 years longer than the US. Disgusting that Bosch think so little of their Customers. Prehaps its because US courts pay out more for injurys caused than the UK ?
