The last remaining Electrolux workers at Spenymoor have learned their jobs are to go.

Electrolux has announced it is closing its finished-goods warehouse and distribution centre in Spennymoor next summer with the loss of 23 jobs.

This comes just a few weeks after the final 250 workers left its manufacturing facility following the departure of a further 232 earlier this year.

An Electrolux spokesman said: “This type of decision is never an easy one to make, but lower sales volumes due to the global economic downturn have reduced the company’s warehousing requirements since the start of 2008.”

Electrolux began making fridges and cookers in Spenymoor in 1947 and it had remained one of Spennymoor’s largest employers for the last 60 years.

However late last year it announced it was shutting down the plant and moving production to a lower-cost centre in Poland. The company went on to say that many of the first tranche of employees made redundant had found alternative work.

The Electrolux spokesman said: “Early signs are that the balance of the factory’s workforce who left at the end of November will have similar success thanks to the efforts of the outplacement company we have appointed and the sterling work of the public sector response group.

“The warehouse employees who are the subject of today’s announcement will receive similar enhanced redundancy packages and support in finding new employment.”
