About a quarter of the 2,700 workers at the Electrolux refrigerator plant in Greenville have recieved redundancy notices. The appliance maker announced in January last year that it was closing the factory.
Redundancies will come in stages and be based on seniority. Hundreds of employees were told that they’ll probably be made redundant in September as production winds down. The plant is now expected to remain open into early 2006, a few months later than originally expected. Production is being transferred to an Electrolux plant opening this summer in Juarez, Mexico due to lower labour costs.
