Electrolux is launching Ultra Silencer Green, the world’s first vacuum cleaner to be made from recycled plastic. With 55% of the cleaner body’s plastic made out recycled materials, the new Ultra Silencer Green is only available in black. The appliance, which is one of world’s quietest vacuum cleaners, also uses 33% less energy than the average 2000 Watt vacuum cleaner.

The use of recycled material determines the Ultra Silencer Green’s colour to reduce the energy used to manufacture the plastic components. The recycling process saves 90% of energy compared to the production of these pieces from virgin plastic.

“If all 20 million vacuum cleaners sold annually in Europe were built the same way, we could save up to 251,000 barrels of oil,” says Elizabeth Farmer, Product Marketing Manager, Floorcare UK. “We could also save 1.6 billion cubic meters of water, which is equivalent to 19 minutes of flow over Niagara falls.”

Adding to the energy savings, the appliance is fitted with a new, 1,250-Watt motor that uses 33% less energy than a standard, 2,000W vacuum cleaner, while delivering the same dust pick-up, thanks to a new floor nozzle. Vacuuming one hour a week with a 2,000W vac consumes 60% of the energy of an A+ energy rated refrigerator on a weekly basis. By doing the same with Ultra Silencer Green, consumers would save up to 73 euros over 10 years, or almost one-third of the product price.

“Reducing the energy use of the appliance is extremely important as usage by consumers represents 75% of the product’s total environmental impact over its life cycle,” continues Elizabeth Farmer, “In fact, if all 100 million European consumers that bought a vacuum cleaner with more than 1300W in the last 8 years vacuumed one hour per week with the Ultra Silencer Green instead of their current vacuum cleaner, we could close down two, 200-megawatt coal-fired power plants.”

Like all Ultra Silencer models, the Ultra Silencer Green emits only 71dB(A), compared to the average vacuum cleaner’s 78dB(A). This was achieved by introducing a number of noise-reducing design features, which include an optimised air-flow system, super-efficient seals to reduce air leakage, special sound absorption material, a soft motor mounting and efficient floor nozzle design.

Like previous Ultra Silencer models, Ultra Silencer Green offers ergonomic features designed to make vacuuming easier, including:

9m cord with auto-reverse cord re-winder
telescopic tube
multi-function upholstery nozzle
soft wheels to protect the floor
moveable handle to aid portability
light weight of only 5.4kg

The UltraSilencer Green has an HEPA H12 exhaust filter. Aided by the Electrolux s-bagג„¢ with automatic hygienic closing, it removes allergens and other harmful particles, making the air that it emits cleaner than the surrounding air.

We think that this is a far, far better idea than simply trying to reduce the energy use and that an Electrolux cleaner is a whole lot better than a £50 Chinese one!

The new Ultra Silencer Green is available in shops this Spring for around about £159.99.
