ParticipantHope to get some advice. Fridge had not been used for about 18 months. Had her running for about 3or 4 days. Working fine. Compressor switching on and off comfortably. Then seemed the compressor had been on a while. It was incredibly hot. Must have been going continuously for an hour. turning the thermostat down didn’t switch it off. I’m presuming the thermostat needs changing. Should I buy a ranco vx0. My main concern is the compressor getting so hot . Is this normal on these old compressors. Seems to sound very smooth when on. Cheers karl

Possibly the thermostat but, hard to make a call on that without seeing the machine and you may well struggle badly with that.
Thermostat could be a VT9 or a VXO, I really don’t know.
I doubt many here have ever seen one, hence the lack of knowledge.

Hi
Dependent on the fixings it may not be a standard swap over of the stat as some older refrigeration the fittings are different.
Also it looks like you have a ice box in the centre and if the phile fastens onto that then its not a vt9 or vx0 it’ll need a ice box stat which is whirlpool kit 2 if I remember correctly.

Hi. Yes that’s right. The stat sits in the top of the ice box. The phile wraps around the side of the ice box and fixes to the underside. The vx0 looks like it could be made to fit. But you don’t think this will work. I’ll order the one you recommend the voltage is 110v. Will these stats be ok, or do I need an american model. Cheers karl
Ps mine is similar to the image. Much better condition. Slightly earlier. Wasn’t made with an ice box door.July 17, 2014 at 8:23 am #416710admin

Hi Karl
You will need a thermostat suitable for a icebox fridge as if you fit a vx0 it will totally defrost that plate thus not allowing ice to be made

The thermostat in this case is NOT voltage dependent , so it will work fine either on 110 or 240v.

Cheers guys, this is really helping. Still not sure which thermostat i need. I should be able to adapt most to fit in. There’s plenty of space where it fixes in. Can email pics of fridge and location if it helps. Karl

Hi Bryan. Yes. It’s a small ribbed open metal box with 2 ice trays in there. There’s no flap on the front. The box ices up to cool the fridge. The thermostat sensor just fixes to the box. This also gets covered by frost. Cheers karl.

Hi Karl
Then a VX0 will NOT work with your fridge.
You need a stat that operates a fridge with a ice box and normally come with a push button for defrosting.
