Thankyou Martin, I’m preparing for the belt arrival– not here yet. This website’s shop advised POL08 was the right one — we shall see! I’ll report back

I suspect that POL 08 will be too big, I think Martin is much nearer the mark with a POL 03.
A picture of the belt orientation for you.

It’s an old bugger, as are we, but from my database (which I refer to occasionally) I fitted a POL03 to the last TD400 I saw in 1998.

Thanks iadom, as I said this website’s shop said to get the POL 08. If it is wrong I SHALL EXCHANGE IT FOR THE 03, as Martin hs now suggested I APPRECIATE THE EXPLODED VIEW. REGARDS

OK Martin belt arrived today. I’ve undone the nuts holding the cross struts to the front casing. There are 3 more nuts at the bottom of the front casing — do I have to remove them to get the front casing eased away from the drum? Simple it aint!

Only undo the cross struts at the top. Do not undo the bottom!
Ease the drum away at the top sufficient to poke the belt through the small gap and fiddle it around the drum. Reattach the struts and ensure the drum rotates freely on the front tub support bearers before fitting belt on motor.

Thankyou Martin. Got some way but cannot seem to reveal the small gap at the bottom, and now seem to be bending the front panel out of shape! Is there any sense loosening the bottom screws a bit — or undoing the door springs?

Door springs?……blimey no. As long as you can ease the drum out of the top of the front support then sufficient gap can be achieved to rotate the belt around the drum. No great physical force required, certainly not enough to bend the front panel because you will be in trouble if you do!

Thinking back, some of these old stagers had a rod from back to front on either side secured with a small nut, has this got them?

I referred to them earlier as “cross struts” 😉

Yes iadom, I’ve got them both undone, and we (my wife and I) are about to try Martin’s latest advice, namely to slide the belt round the still closed part of the drum opening. It is a tight fit even with the gap opened at the top

Well we’ve got the belt past the two side bits of the front drum support — but the bottom bit is impossibly tight. Any ideas? (My wife — who wanted a new dryer — said no man could have fitted a new belt to this model — the design is too complicated, she says!!)

A few hours later…having taken off the back, and unscrewed the tiny nuts retaining the wire stay at mid height, THAT did the trick! But as you both rightly suggested this belt is TOO LONG! So I shall order POL 03 but now I know how to! Thanks for all the help

Martin referred to the ‘cross struts at the top’. You eventually found the ‘rods’ much lower down that I was talking about. ;). I’m sure the correct belt will have it running for many years. 🙂
