Have you removed the pulley pin and threaded the belt through the pulley assembly???
It looks as though you have from that picture, you should not have done that, the pulley should have been left untouched.

The grooved side of the belt should run on the drum and in the grooves on the motor shaft. You needed to unbolt the fan from the motor shaft to allow the belt to be slid onto the motor pulley and then the jockey pulley should press against the side of the belt as shown in Martins diagram.

Ditto Iadom’s observation. The Jockey pulley has been tampered with to thread the belt through it for some reason?…..wrong. Undo all that and fit belt as per the illustration. The Jockey pulley is just a sprung loaded tensioner that takes up the slack and runs on the outside of the belt.

Bingo — it works! Thanks enormously guys for all your help. That last bit of intelligence about loosening the bolt and removing the fan was crucial. In my innocence I had been led astray by iadom’s exploded view which to my eye seemed to have the belt going round the plastic pulley! Martin’s final diagram also helped. Even my wife is happy! The intro to my manual will start “Dont start this job unless you have a degree in engineering…” or access to the UK Whitegoods tumbler dryer forum 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
