I sometimes give it a blast with compressed air but most of the time it doesn’t require anything.

Thanks, my dad has given me something very like that, he said he has had it for about 35 years. Nearly as old as me. 😯

New brushes came today and looked identical to the old ones.

Fitted and 🙂 machine burst into life.

Was noisy at first and there were some sparks but after a spin cycle noise and sparks have disappeared.

Thanks to everyone for there help.

What do I clean the motor contact with?

Fine glasspaper, assuming that by “motor-contact” you mean the cylinder if copper strips that the brushes bear against.
Don’t use (black) emery-paper, as the grit embeds into the copper and will increase wear of your new brushes. a ladie’s “emery-board” for doing fingernails is usually glasspaper and is OK for the job. (don’t ask how I know these things!
