I use Ntl for my broadband service, £24.99 per month for 2 meg, going up to 10 meg 😯 if I want it for £37.99 soon. Some areas do have problems with Ntl due to the difference in the quality of their networks, round here it was installed by Cable & Wireless so we have a good service.
I also have a Zen dial up account as a back up. been with them over 9 years, top class support, Their broadband service is always at or near the top of the tree in any survey .November 28, 2005 at 11:40 am #155793Phidom

Have you ever checked that you actually get 2 meg? mine is supposed to be 1 meg but I’ve known it go as slow as 16 k, i.e. slower than a dial-up. BT were always good at ripping off businesses.

Yep, run speed tests several times, cable works very well if the infrastructure is sound, and a 20 to 1 contention rate unlike ADSL which has a 50 to 1 rate in most cases.
Here you go, a copy of a quick speed test done a second ago.

1st 128K took 547 ms = 239620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 532 ms = 246376 Bytes/sec = approx 2050 kbits/secIn fact that is fractionally over 2 meg 🙂

Try this link for an accurate gauge of speed http://www.btopenworld.com/speedtest
Greg 😉
It will download a file and look at kb/s
ie – 100kb/s =1mb/sec
I use BT 2mb home user – and it can vary from 1.3mb – 2.4mb sec.
Its alll down to contention. Bt use 50:1 that means you could be at worst sharing your connection with 49 other users and if they all downloading would make it really slow.November 28, 2005 at 7:22 pm #155796iadom

What is the cost of your BT 2 meg service with 50:1 contention compared to my Ntl 20:1 at £24.99 ?

I’m confused by that BT speed test link:
File download size Minimum download time expected @ 500kbit/s
Small (5 Mbytes) 1 minute 45 seconds
Medium (10 Mbytes) 3 minutes
Large (15 Mbytes) 4 minutes 30 secondsIs 2 Meg Broadband 2 million bits per second, not 2 million bytes?

1mb – One million bytes (1,000,000 bytes or 1,048,576 bytes)

So, if ISPs are quoting speeds in Mb, not MB then, by my calculations a 2Mb connection will allow data to transfer at 220KB/sec.

Thats the way I read it Phidom, 220kb/s app 2.2mb so very good connection speed.

Divide the Mb value by 8 to get the MB value
i.e. A 1Mb (1024Kb) connection transfers at 128KB per second

Don’t bother with Tiscali for your Broadband, I just managed to get connected after trying since 6.30pm. I’ve been doing modem tests, line tests and god knows what else to try and sort it but I suppose they were just overloaded with surfers. :haier:
