This may have been covered before, but i’m looking at taking payments via c.card & debit card- time i got into the 21st century!.
I’ve had quote from Elavon for hiring mobile terminal for £26.50 a month + 1.75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of transactions -c.card & 18p for debit card payments.
Is this about right?
Waiting to hear from streamline and rbs for there quotes.
Anyone know of reliable supplier with no hassle as I googled Elavon and read some worrying reports.
Any info appreciated.

I will be putting off getting card processing gear for as long as possible but when cheques disappear it won’t be possible to operate without it. My main concern if it uses mobile phone technology is what you do in areas with no signal. Also it seems that this whole business of processing card payments is not properly regulated, hence the recent demise of Flyglobespan. 🙁

clivedoesnt sound a bad deal as such and the rental at least is cheaper than I use. Make sure it includes data transaction charges (ie the telephone call made to authorise the card) some include this in the rental, others charge per call/minute. Also, find out what phone network they use and make sure it works in your area. They will also probably charge you if it goes wrong. My battery failed and they couriered a new one to me same day, cost to me £150!

my mates just got a terminal from abbey , think its about 25 per month and free calls via vodaphone..
we use paypal a lot ..we charge landlords etc upfront call-out and then get office to send another pay pal for parts balance whilst at property,, most of the time we have to order parts and go back , so we make sure parts balance paid b4 we go back … dont know if anyone uses pay-pal but all you do is send email payment request , cust then click link in email takes them to paypal online bank where they can pay with any card..
i think pay pal also offer virual terminal , think its web based where you log in and use online terminal..so idf you have blackberry etc you can use as terminal … probally cheaper then rental of terminal from bank … dont really know all the ins and outs but may be worth a look ..

ask the rep about usage charges
for instance if your monthly transaction charges earn the processing company less than £16 per month then that minimum usage fee will be added on to your monthly bill (£16) on top of rental charges etc.

Another option is to obtain a Apple I Phone, there are various apps that you can use to process card payments, the data is free as its in with your monthly tariff, theres no monthly fee for a terminal, you pay per transaction.
As with any mobile data solution coverage can always be an issue and I cannot see that improving any time soon. My solution is that as I have premises we phone in and process the transaction while at the job so we know we have been paid before we leave the job, this would also work if you work from home and say the good lady is at home all day.

thanks for your feedback chaps, I think this is the way to go, as how many times do you go to customers now who say “dont use cheques these days”, then cant find the cheque book – May also increase your credability as a well organised company keeping up with modern technology. Just my take on it anyway. I will double check usage charges though- thanks.

despite all the technology and the prompting to pay by cards, my most popular payment method is still cheques by a wide margin. There is no way I could declare my business a cheque free zone yet. I think some like the security of paying by cheque and I can understand that. They usually add, while writing the cheque, that they havent written one for ages!
Still have to trek to the bank to pay in cash anyway, dont you?
Somehow, I really dont think customers entering their card numbers into a strange lap top or i phone is a viable method of payment, I certainly wouldnt do it unless I knew the tradesman very well.February 13, 2010 at 5:47 pm #311856iadom

Looking at my accounts for the past few years I would say that I have consistantly taken about 60{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} cash 40{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} cheques. I would guess that I have been asked if I do card transactions no more than 5 or 6 times in the past five years.
In over thirty years I have had very few bounced cheques where I didn’t eventually manage to recover the funds.
With only a few years left I won’t be bothering with cards. 🙂

Cheques are due to disappear from UK by 31 Oct 18 if all goes to plan.

You have this many days to sort it out……
http://www.timeanddate.com/counters/cus … &sec=&p0=0
In reality you need to ready well before this as no doubt, certain banks will stop issuing cheques books well in advance of this date. Cheques really are starting to disappear…the schools that our kids attend have recently stopped taking cheques and only use parentpay scheme or similar.
Don’t know what is going to work as a lot of remote villages around here have very poor or no network coverage… difficult to see what the alternative options could be…
Saying that I had a Bank of England Cheque the other day, the guy used to be a BOE official…and no his cheque did not bounce….

I suppose one strategy would be to insist on cash only for addresses in areas with no phone coverage. This could be made clear when making the appointment.

Well for you Clive go for it mate. These’s old boys that still take cheques are stuck in a 20th century bloomin’ time warp. Shops don’t take cheques. filling stations don’t take cheques and customers rarely write them out these days in favour of their little plastic card….

Having a merchant services account (as well as being able to accept cheques and cash)allows you to cover all your bases. No excuses not to get paid there and then. …“Oh, my husband has gone off to work and forgot to leave the cheque book is it OK if he drops the money round in the morning?” or Landlord: “Can you call and fix an Indesit washer dryer at one of my flats in Scumtown then send me the bill?”. Accepting cards also allows you to take card details over the phone so you can ring the husband at work or the landlord in his ivory tower and get paid there and then.
I use Streamline by the way (almost 3.5 years now) and they are very good, rates are cheap and it’s money in the bank every time!:D
…and you do get more custom by showing you accept VISA & MASTERCARD on your adverts….oh yes. 8)
Live the dream and welcome to the 21st century!!!

No need, it you’re out in the sticks with no GPRS signal to your terminal you simply use the old fashioned voucher system through a ‘card cruncher’ that your merchant service provider gives you!

A company called squareupprovide a dongle for your mobile phone for swiping payment cards. It seems to be US based only at the moment but it can only be a matter of time….

Has anyone saw the latest Iphone advert, I noticed that they have a new app that lets you take credit cards on Iphones with no extra harware. It seems like they are supporting UK businesses now as the bumf says
In addition to the USA, we support Canada and the UK, with transactions in the native currencies, $CAD and £GBP respectively.
The app is called Credit Card Terminal UK and is supplied by http://www.innerfence.com/
Looking at the pricing on the US site it costs 99¢ for the iphone app, $25 per month for the merchant account and 24¢ + 2.09{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}–3.79{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} per transaction. The 2.09{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} charge applies if you verify the card details by inputting the cardholders postcode and house number.
I have sent them an email asking them to confirm UK pricing and wonder if anyone has tried this so far??
John
