Chest Freezer Details:
King – Made in Denmark
No 04249010
Mod CLM200
220-240V 60W 50 cycles
Class N
Freezer Cap 18.0 Kg/24hr
Rating 0.52 KWh/24h
I believe the thermostat is faulty and want to replace it. I have 2 thermometers inside the chest both confirming the temperature as -30C. Which is too cold. If I put some additional room temp food in the red warning light comes on. It then takes at least 24 hours to get back down to the -30C If I put it on fast freeze it seems to make makes no difference. The movement of the max to min temp control Knob does cause the red light to go out only if I go right down to min setting. Do you think it is the thermostat? I have accessed the thermost fitted which is a Danfoss it has many numbers on the body of which there are: -25T65 EN60730-2-9. The length of the capilary phile is about 80 cm. I noticed there is an adjusting screw which seems to tie up with a cam should I try adjusting this? or as I have a test meter what tests can I carry out/Help please

Take this with CAUTION (i’m NOT a ‘fridge engineer!)
the Capilliary and bellows is a sealed assembly, filled with a volatile liquid(ether?) the bellows expands/contracts as the temperature in the capilliary varies….this is used to operate the switch…the pressure is opposed by a spring…I suspect that’s what the adjustment screw COULD operate, in order to calibrate the operating-range withinthe desired temperatures.
BUT! It’s not quite that simple! some ‘stats also have a lever-and-spring arrangement to set the DIFFERENTIAL (again, with an adjustment.
Differential is the gap between cut-in temp and cut-out temp…too wide and the fridge temp varies widely, too narrow and the compressor cycles continuously, leading to overheat and early failure.
the fact your freezer has failed “on” makes me think the capilliary is leaky and the stat has failed in the “running” position. No doubt a “proper” engineer will shoot me down in flames 😉
Just a reminder….unplug first…..a multimeter or low-voltage test-lamp will be all you need to check the operating-point
otherwise, see the “engineer” link at the bottom of the page (your best insurance against a rogue “repairer” 🙂

Thanks cockney steve,
I had seen the belows which is joined to the capilary tube and assumed that was the actuating method. What I now need is to obtain the correct replacement thermostat if you or someone can advise me on which one. Most spares sites don’t list the King Freezers.
I don’t think it’s worth playing with the adjustment screw as it is probably NBG.
The other problem in picking the right replacement is that some thermostates have live feedback?? My freezer hasn’t got a defrost system. It is done by turning off the power, nice & simple. So hope someone out there is able to tell me which one to fit to replace it.

errm….you tried the parts service on this forum? 😆

Yes cockney steve, but it doesn’t list thermostats for my Freezer or recognise the info I gave for my thermostat as fitted. So I am stuck unless I am able to determine a replacement. 🙁

that’s why there’s an e-mail facility! 😆
johnmac 11 beat me to it …. if in doubt, ask… 😀May 17, 2008 at 2:39 pm #252342Jimlad

Thanks johnmac11 & cockney steve,
johnmac11 thanks for the web site, that is my freezer in their list but they don’t sell spares from what I can see. I am happy to install my own thermostat if I can get the correct replacement. I have used the Email facilities in a number of other sites most don’t respond of the others they say they haven’t a replacement. All I want is to know the details of alternative thermostats and where I might get one.

Hi Jimlad,
From the sounds of it it’s a bog standard freezer, probably made by Vestfrost in Denmark at some point. Without knowing more and an approximate age it’s hard to say more.
Getting a straight replacement will not be easy, if even possible. However, a standard freezer stat like this should do the job just fine.
I have to say though that, from your description, I’m not entirely convinced that that will 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} cure the problems.

🙂 Thanks kwatt ,
The freezer was bought in March 2002 from Gillmans in Gloucester.
What other problems might there be and what checks could I do to locate the problems? If I don’t get any more info then it may be worth trying the one you suggest?

Hi Jimlad,
It is an Ice King then and that’s DAD’s (Gilman’s) own brand and they should be able to supply spares for it. I don’t have any info on them I’m afraid, but it should use a standard stat I would think.
What concerns me is the temperature recovery time, it shouldn’t take that long.
Fast freeze merely by-passes the stat and runs the compressor continually but, if the compressor is stalling or cutting out, it will make not a jot of difference.
That said, for all the cost of a stat, it’s worth a go.

Thanks kwatt ,
Not sure what the DAD’s is about?
Are you saying I should preferably get the replacement from Gillman’s or would the one you suggested be as good?If your fears are correct I assume it’s a new freezer?

Sorry, I forgot you wouldn’t get the reference. DAD is a trade appliance distributor, Domestic Appliance Distributors IIRC.
The alternative there should be perfectly okay but, sometimes with generic parts like this, it’s not just a straightforward swap and some adjusting is required.
If there is a compressor problem then it is likely to be uneconomic to repair or insulation, in which case it’s terminal.

😀 Thanks kwatt,
Will probably order what you suggested as you are the first to give me a clear suggestion. I find it odd that I can’t just get a Danfoss direct replacement, but ha ho such as it is.Jimlad

HELP 🙁 😕 ❓ 😥
Have just received my replacement Thermostat (VS5 – Universal Freezer Thermostat) but find the capilary phile is twice as long as the original one. Is it ok to coil up the excess length leaving it in the ambient external temperature or should I try to carefully bend it not too tight of course and feed a double lenght into the insert tube making sure I don’t kink it and that the tip is at the furtherest point into the cold area? assuming it will go.Jimlad
