    Hi

The White Knight range are about the best out there, easy and relatively inexpensive to repair. Other ones to have a look at are the Hotpoint / Creda machines.

Back in ye olden days when one worked for NEEB I would have recomended Creda or Jackson as being the most reliable. ‘Course that was in the days of when Creda/Jackson was part of TI Group. (Showing my age)
White Knight made by Crosslee Industries (Old Philips Factory) are also very good & my personal recomendation would be them.

As for new generation Creda/Indesit (Asda is flogging one for £85) I really can’t advise, my hunch would be that if it is made by the Merphoney Group stay well clear!!!

I went into to town today to have a poke about at them.

The hotpoint looks the best, has the vent pipe attachs to the door at the front, ideal for a flat, as i can hang it out of window and detatch it and put it away after.
The White knights are rear vented, so not ideal.

save your money, and get something that doesnt have a serious design flaw, where the only part it needs isnt actually available

rear vented or not, its a better option

The only part I ever fit in any quantity on the small Hotpoint/Creda dryer is the belt and I carry a couple of them. The basic machine is virtually the same as it has been for well over 20 years or more. The ultra tight stretchy belt is an absolute pain on all modern dryers but seems to fail more on Hotpoint/Creda/Indesit machines than any other.

    Come again?

You mean the Front vented 1’s are not worth having?
If you saw my flat you would want a front venter though…..

    In plain English……..

The two popular compact dryers are the White Knight and the Hotpoint group machines (several different badges, same machine).

The WK machine is a rear vent. Its major weakness is that the drum support/hub bearing unit starts to work loose on the back of the drum, neccessitating the purchase of a new drum as the hub is not a spare part. The latest machines have got rid of the hub and the drum runs on felt slip rings front and rear, which get chewed up with alarming regularity.

The Hotpoint machine is a front vent. Due to cost cutting in production, the belt tensioning mechanism has been removed and an elasticated belt substituted. These fail regularly. Helo has had several where the tension of the belt pulling on the shaft of the motor has buckled the floor of the machine, doubtless causing the belt to run off the motor shaft.

Both machines are a bit cheap and cheerful, as you might expect from the price point – you pays your money and takes your pick.

    Regards,
    Penguin45.

Which is why I mourn the passing of Creda & the TI Group as we once knew it. I wonder how long it will take Merphoney to close down all UK operations and transfer to the People’s Republic of cheap and nasty.

You know dear Penguin you have shocked me to the core when you mention that now White Knight are now “cheaping” their products. I recall the one’s in our showroom were well made and proud to boast with a little label & BS Logo that the drum was made with British Steel.

    Sad day. – WQ 🙁
