ParticipantHi,
I’ve been asked about possibly doing a straight 1 for 1 replacement of NEFF T45D40X1 Flush Induction Hob. My understanding is that this is in a natural stone worktop and my reading up suggests this would need some special silcone sealant to prevent the stone worktop from becoming discoloured. Could anyone advise which Silicone would be right for the job? and possibly where I can get some from?
Thanks, Jon

Hi Jon,
If you silicone it in the hob is then rendered “inaccessible for service” so nobody will ever repair it. Basically, a hob should never be siliconed in, you should use the clamps provided with the hob to fit it correctly and there is a proper sealing strip provided in the installation pack as well or, should be.

Thanks K.
Normally yes, but this particular NEFF appliance does not have mounting brackets or clamps. It’s a flush fit type which you have to drop into the correct size recess and then silicone round the gap at the edges. This is specified in the manufacturers installation instructions as the correct way to fit.

On this occasion Ken is incorrect, when you remove the old hob you must clean off all the remaining silicon, use a silicon remover if nessassary. The new hob will probably have a foam seal pre fitted, if not use a silicon that is acid free and black in colour to match the hob glass, when fitted you have to very accuratley fill the slot that will be around the hob to make a perfect finish, also put little packers in at the first stage to make sure the hob finishes flush with the worktop. This isnt a 10 minute job and requires good skill and care.

Thanks for the advise, it is much appreciated. Not the normal fit so it sounds like I’m going to have to allow myself a good few hours if the job goes ahead 🙁 I found some Otto Seal S70 sealant on the web which isn’t too expensive and is garaunteed not to cause any staining on natural stone, so i’ll probably use that.
Thanks again,

If this is correct then the info should have specified the silicone to use.
I would contact BSH and ask them for both the specs and supplier, if it is a requirement to satisfy the installation instructions this should pose no issue for them, but it could be a way of them passing responsibility for future damage onto you. :rotfl:
Its a common ploy, we’ll tell you what to do, but not what to use.
You may also want to have your sales terms specify that you wont take responsibility for any damage if the future as the last thing you’ll want is a cracked top to replace. 😉

Acid and acetone free silcons are not unusual, franke produce a glass sink that also needs this type of silicon.

Its rebated in to the granite, so sits on a ledge so to speak, but you need about 1 to 2mm gAp around the hob for expansion so this needs to be filed otherwise food and liquids will get in. The hob glass is specifically designed to do this, the edge is very square profile. I havd fitted quite a few,

Sounds very nice but how do you get it out to do service?
Not that I would attempt it myself as I usually walk away from hobs in stone worktops as you never know how or what it’s been glued in with.

Brandnew stanley knife, cut around the hob in the slot, push hob up from underneath and out it pops, easy, never had a problem with any hob thats siliconed in, stanley is your freind!

Not a problem, clean off silicone and refit with a new self adhesive seal, always have few on the shelf. Dosnt everyone carry one? You always get the odd hob that the seal is stuck to the worksurface or destroyed by grease, so put a new one on and charge customer accordingly.

So you can use self adhiesive seal on the ones which are rebated in to the granite when you refit after service?
