ParticipantHi there good people.
I need some help before the wife gets back!
I went to put some washing on this morning and it started it’s first cycle and I heard a big click…..the consumer unit fuse had blown. I reset the fuse switch and tried it again…..did not work, tried the washing machine fuse and it was fine.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?
I have heard that the most common problem with washing machines are the selector dials???? I also do not have to hand, the model number with me!!!!!!! Doh!
I did have a little peak inside the washer to see any tell tale signs of anything that had blown on the pcb etc but found nothing!Any help would be brilliant….thanks in advance.

You have heard wrong, the ‘selector dials’ are far from the most common cause of faults on washing machines. Sadly most DIY people jump in with both feet and change very expensive parts that are often not needed and invariably make the situation worse.
There are many possible causes of your fault, motor brush or armature failure, door lock, heater, pump, loose or chafing wiring etc. The only way to check is with the correct test equipment and suitable knowledge/experience.
Some of the above faults can indeed lead to damage on the control unit PCB’s so you need to check out all the possibilities.
Click the link in my Sig to see if we have someone who can help.
Please remember to remove the plug if you are putting your hands inside.
Exact model number would be a help if you can find it.
Jim.

how long had the machine been running before it went bang? and was it full or empty of water?
and also has it been quite noisy for a while?
the more details the better help we can give:)September 5, 2006 at 10:52 am #187578specialbeat

Hi.
The machine litterally was running for about 1 minute I would say!
I am not sure if the water was still there….BUT, I could open the door STRAIGHT away as if the lock had switched off…I suppose this presumes that there was no water in the drum!!!!!!!!
I will find out the model number and post here tonight if that helps then.Yes unfortunately I don’t have any knowledge of washing machines at all, and lets face it, I am going to have to get someone in to have a look at it…..how much do these people charge for estimates etc…..I obvoiusly don’t want to be stung!
Thanks guys.

Try the link below for a local engineer and speak with them directly on that score. 😉

Hiya.
I have had a tinker with the washing machine and realised that someone had the wires round the wrong way in the plug. The Earth was going to Nuetral and the nuetral to Earth……HOW THE HECK DID THE WASHING MACHINE WORK IN THE FIRST PLACE??????
Anyway, I have put the wires back to normal and still doesn’t work…..I bet you are all thinking that something has blown!!!!!! Well I checked the door switch (a brick coloured plastic thing with Metaflex (Model M4) written on it) and I have buzzed it out with a multi meter and there is nothing there (no contact) when pushing the switch in.Does everyone agree with me that this should be changed????
Thanks.
ALSO….the model number (all i can find on the back of the washer) is IPX4September 5, 2006 at 7:28 pm #187581iadom

The machine will work with Earth and Neutral reversed, until something goes wrong that is. The model and serial number are usually on the door hinge or on the door itself close by. IPX4 means it has past certain splash tests.
You could try a new door lock, they do fail quite often, part number 1602390, available in the shop here at UKWG’s, however I fear it will have damaged the control unit’s PCB if it took the trip out. 😥

check for visable signs of damage to the tracks nearest the front of the timer unit not cheap if dead::(

Cheers.
I have ordered a new door switch and will try that when I receive it!Thanks.

good luck:)
let us know how you get on.September 7, 2006 at 9:07 am #187585specialbeat

Oh no.
I have received the NEW door switch and buzzed it out and is the same as the old one! So it looks like the door switch is absolutely fine!
One must presume that the switch only works when there is mains running through it.What do I check next? Anyone??????
Thanks.

specialbeat, I think the time is fast approaching when you need to bite the bullet and get some pro help. The original door lock could still be faulty, you may find yourself changing other parts that are not required or damage things further. As I mentioned in my first post there are several things that can cause the circuit breakers to fail and subsequently damage the control unit PCB. These all need testing and eliminating, before you start changing any other parts.
Quote from one of your earlier posts. ‘unfortunately I don’t have any knowledge of washing machines at all’
If you are in a hole, stop digging, 😉
NB. We strongly advise you not to attempt any ‘live’ testing.

OK..what I will do is replace the switch with the new one…..If that fails, which it probably will, I will then seek help from someone in my area of Thatcham, Berkshire. I have found a couple of numbers…..just hope I don’t get diddled! I will open up the washing machine before he comes round as to save time and cut labour costs ….ha ha…..am I tight or what!
How much would a new PCB cost for a Creda 17086 then?
Thanks.

Always a good idea to replace the doorlock on these even if it is not the eventual cause of fault. I wouldn’t bother ‘opening up’ the machine before a visit. An experienced engineer, will be inside and at the innards in a couple of minutes at the most.
The control unit is around £65 + vat but certain types of damage can be repaired, best to let ‘a man who knows’ have a look. 😀
Jim.
PS. Thatcham is on Martins patch, he posted earlier in this thread. You will find no better service in your area, check out his web site. 8)
