ParticipantMy Tumble dryer has broken down.
The motor is not turning
I removed the lid, powered up my tumble dryer and pushed the drum my hand too see if it starts didn’t start
I think the motor is broken can I bench test the motor?
or is it more likely to be the timer?February 17, 2012 at 7:37 pm #369151iadom

When you try to start the dryer can you hear any buzzing/humming noise, does the heater come on, can you hear the timer ticking?
Motors are very reliable on these, I have possibly only changed one or two in over 40 years.
A faulty timer could cause this fault as can a faulty capacitor. No need to ‘bench test’ anything. The motor can be checked for continuity with a decent multimeter or megger., with the mains plug removed of course.

Yes their is humming noise heater comes on, and the timer works.
When I power up the Tumble dryer and push the drum the motor make a different type of noise as too when pushed with no power.I checked the motor for continuity The 3 wire coming out of the motor I presumed two of the wires are live and one is the neutral.
I had continuity between the live and neutral wires. I also had continuity between the two live wires should I have continuity between the two live wires?
If it was the Capacitor at fault should it have started when I pushed the drum?February 17, 2012 at 9:36 pm #369153February 18, 2012 at 1:44 pm #369154jason123p68

I have tried a new Capacitor
I have checked for continuity from the live pin on the plug to the two wire on the timer which are going to the motor both would become live at the same time is this correct?February 18, 2012 at 3:32 pm #369155iadom

There is no need to ‘live’ test to find any fault on this machine.
If you have tried a new capacitor then you could have checked the motor for continuity and resistance at the same time.

I have checked the motor for continuity the three wires coming out of the motor two live and one neutral
I have continuity between all of them.I didn’t check the machine live, I put one on my test leads on the live pin of the plug turned the timer to an on position,
and from the timer metered the two wires going to the motor which both had continuity.
So the timer two wires going to the motor live at the same time.February 19, 2012 at 2:03 pm #369157jason123p68

Here are the resistance readings of the motor.
Between Red and Neutral = 15.4 ohms
Between brown and Neutral = 16.2 Ohms
Between Brown and Red 01.4 OhmsFebruary 19, 2012 at 2:28 pm #369158iadom

These are the readings for most Creda dryer motors.
Resistance of Winding 1(Red Lead)-31.6 to 34.8 Ohms @ 20 C
Resistance of Winding 2 (Brown Lead)-27.8 to 30.8 Ohms @ 20 CA reading between red and brown is going through both sets of windings.

Would you say my motor is broken from the readings I have?
Should I have continuity between both sets of windings?February 19, 2012 at 6:51 pm #369160iadom
ModeratorRe: creda reversair 37650
You should get continuity between red & brown but the resistance reading you give is way out.
Do the motor windings look clean and shiny or are there signs of discolouration, darkness or burning?

Manage to find a tumble dryer similar too the one I have in a skip, remove the motor fitted the motor to my Dryer now works But not sure which way the fan blades fit on the end of the motor.
Have I mounted them correctly? shown in pictureFebruary 28, 2012 at 6:53 pm #369162iadom

If you had fitted it the wrong way round you would not be able to get the back on. 😀

The tumble dryer has broken down again the motor stopped turning
and became stiff my hand to turn.February 29, 2012 at 2:01 pm #369164jason123p68

I managed to get a second motor which runs for about ten minutes the stops because it over heating. All the motor I fitted look the same but are their different types?
