ParticipantAfter about 2 secs from switching on, appliance clicks about 6 times rapidly and trips main rcd. Clicking sound comes from vicinity of switches. Also there is a build up of water in bottom of appliance (it was half way through cycle when first tripped out). Have tried holding “on” switch down for 2 secs, but still trips out. May be coincidence, but have no hot water at moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Possibly dispenser solenoid shorting out? That produces a clacking noise when activated, and requires the machine to be into the programme, with water in, ready to heat.
Power off if you’re going to remove the door and be careful of the edges – you can shave with them.

Possibly a flooded base. If memory serves me right 8322 is a whirlpool machine with an askoll pump. A flood in the base can short out the wash pump. You’ll have to bail out the inside first then try tipping the machine backward a little and draining the base.

Had a look at door switch area, reassembled, bailed out little bit of water inside base of machine, and was able to switch on without rcd tripping. Then start button light was flashing twice, continuously. Then managed to get it into a program, which it started, but was then beeping continuously. This is a built in appliance, so take it that it has to be pulled out to access motors, pumps etc.

The two flashes indicate a leak into the base or undertray of the machine, as per DP’s post. For full access, you will have to remove it from it’s housing. The front lower panel can be removed in situ if you want to have a peek, but don’t stick your fingers in without cutting the power……

When you say it trips the RCD do you mean the RCD or the MCB?
An RCD will not trip on overcurrent or short circuit current. If it is the RCD that is tripping then you have a fault between either live to earth or neutral to earth. This could be caused by dampness, cable chaffing or overheated cables terminals tracking to earth.
For the record an RCD works on a current balance system. The unit measures the current leaving the unit and compares it to the current entering the unit i.e. current in live conductor compared to current in neutral conductor. If the currents are the same then all is ok, the RCD won’t trip. If the currents are different then this indicates a current leakage in the circuit to earth, hence the unit trips. No amount of overcurent will trip the unit, that is why the RCD must be protected by an MCB or standard fuse.
For these reasons I suspect an earth fault of some sort probably caused by ingress of water. Try disconecting the pumps and bell them between live/Neutral and earth/casing. See what reading you get, it should be Megohms. Also try this on the heating element as elements are prone to trip RCD’s due to breakdown of the magnesium oxide powder insulator between the casing and the element wire. The mag powder is hydroscopic (absorbs moisture) hence attracts problems in damp conditions.
Hope this helps
P.s if the unit is an RCBO (combined MCB/RCD) its all a different story, as these units will trip on overcurrent too !

Wow 😯
From a person who, and I quoteKen_W wrote:Hi Kwat,

whom has gone from poor diction and un-technical in a previous post to an electrical expert is just astounding 😕
Please tell us your secret ❓Greg

It is all in the research 😀
Got to test you guys sometimes !! 😀 All a bit of harmless fun.
Please stand by my last post though, it is all fact.
Cheers

As said on my 2nd post, after removing some water from inside machine, machine powers up and does not trip rcd, but start button light flashes twice. Don’t need lesson regarding rcd, mcb and rcbo, I’m a spark. Have now removed bottom front cover and drained water from tray. Was hoping to start appliance and see where leak was coming from. Unfortunately now light flashes four times. Can someone please tell me what the fault code means.

Hi dougie
Its saying a drain fault or level detection fault ie water indicator clogged/faulty or at worse PCB fault.
Check that filters are clean and that the WI below filter at 3 o clock position (round ish and black with grills) isn’t gunged up 😉Greg

Checked – ok, and cleaned. Part at bottom left, rear section looks to be bunged up with debris, or should this be orange in colour. What is it, and how do I take it apart.

The unit with the orange colouring I would imagine is the water softner unit. The colouring is normal and the unit will not need dismantling (not that you could)
If you have checked what I said and its draining ok, then you may want to consider an engineer from the link below.Greg

If the drain hose is into a stand pipe check that it’s not too far in causing syphoning.
Other than that I go along with Gegsy, time for an engineer.DP

Many parts of the unit still have water inside. Have checked circulating pump and it is one of these Askoll types. Is it possible that this is the problem? What causes the water that was in the bottom tray? Thanks in advance, Doug.

Anything is possible. If you’ve drained the base, cleaned everything out and it still doesn’t work we’d be on best guess now. Save yourself some money, get an engineer in to diagnose the fault and repair. Cheaper than throwing parts at it and getting it wrong.
Water in the base = leak, overfoaming or backflow from drain.
