ParticipantI always felt concerned about turning a dishwasher upside down to work on it. When I worked at Comet they all did so I tried it and found it much easier to work on. Presumably there’s no problem with this? I was worried about the salts and regeneration system.

Oh don’t start me on that one Andy, much aired on here before in many Bosch threads. :rolls:
What goes up must come down , gravity, Einstein and all that…..amazing testimonials from those that stand on their head etc etc… :rotfl:

I just did get you started on this one. Is that a yes or a no then? That answer’s too cryptic for me this mornin’ 🙂

No and never will 🙂

Thanks for reply Greg. Reasons? Did you just (like I did) have a gut feeling you shouldn’t? Is there any substantiated reason why we shouldn’t? The Comet lads always did, and I started too, never heard of a problem after.

Hi Andy
Im with Martin on this one, what goes up etc. I would be worried that either when turned upside down or returned for that position water may ingress into electrical/electronic components 😯
I know some manufacturers tech have advised you can but Im not comfortable doing it. 8)Greg

All the main components are underneath, and would therefore be on top when turned upside down. You could argue that ingress is more likely while the dishwasher is the right way up? 🙂 The timer etc is sealed separately behind the door.
I’m with you in the feeling that you shouldn’t turn appliances upside down, but I like to work on logic, and am wondering if there’s any logical reason why you shouldn’t, rather than an almost superstitious reason 😉

Some matrix tanks have a breather hole which when turned upside down may empty the contents of the tank into lid space, then when returned to normal orintation would spill into components.

Whirlpool trained us to work on their machines upside down. Lot of water on the floor when you do this. I only lie it over on the left hand side onto my meter bag, keeping it about 12 inches off horizontal, when I’ve a wash pump or heater to change. Very little spillage that way and with the base off everything is accessible. Most installations I don’t have to disconnect any pipework using this method.
Anything with a pressure hose and switch or with the level control in the water matrix, I keep upright, as much as possible.Brian

Nice one Andy I’m pleased you apply the same technique as I do. 🙂

As Greg mentioned, the water matrix on some makes and models, the salt water tank and ion exchanger all will spill their lot everywhere! Rinse Aid can leak out of the top of some older machines and make a lovely mess around the control panel electronics and switchgear. The tub seals, motor mounting grommets and straps, float switch mountings, module connectors, terminal block mounts, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all find the effects of gravity a little confusing and bits and bobs fall off in all directions!! :rolls:
All great fun if your work ethic doesn’t include logic I guess?

Only lay to the side or back, if possible not on the water matrix side. Even then only lay it against something.
We had one the other day, D/W that would not drain and was in a caravan. Customer dragged it to his front door, opened the D/W door and tipped it forwards to drain it. You guessed it, water went into the open bottom of the D/W door and into the board etc.
Obviously one car short of a queue.

My instincts were right then 😉
The Indesit & Hotpoint dishwashers don’t seem to mind though.

Is it your back playing up again Andy? Or is grovelling around on the kitchen floor a pain these days I wonder?…

Ah now if you are referring to the later ‘range’ (heap is a better word though) of Indesit m/c’s, they are duff by the time one is called in to fix them. Turn them upside down and that seals their fate good and proper!November 11, 2006 at 11:49 pm #194784BSH-MAN

No!
Too much mess!

Notice, if you will, how gravity helps keep all the vital components on the ground for free and easy access! 😉
