Thanks for that Martin, Very informative, Must admit I haven’t got a loop tester but after in insulation and earth continuity test I always test between the machine and some exposed pipework, And alway check the socket with a martindale. Will look into the ” Socket and See” earth tester Got to be better than nothing.

Thanks for the info Martin, the only question I have is 8.0 ohms passing the test, I take it that was tested on a circuit with an RCD in place as being an ex Electricity Board Electrician and Engineer we were always taught that less than 1.0 ohm passed unless on an RCD circuit where a higher reading was acceptable, but as you said to go into far deeper would be a bit pointless but RCD protected circuits are totally different to rewireable or cartridge type fuse protected circuits, admittadly you don’t see so many of them these days.
I do appreciate you have tried to keep it simple for everyone in general and I am not criticising in any way at all, in fact the more Engineers know about correct testing procedures the better, I have always done exactly the same tests as you have put in the document not for just the customers safety but my own as well. 😀

Well with forty years of experience behind it, it should be pretty good. I’ve sent off my two free coupons from the UKW breakfast cereal packets and hope to have my copy soon. 😀

The response has been somewhat overwhelming I have to say. I’ve sent out close on 40 copies in the last 24 hours alone. So I’m well chuffed on that response guys..thanks.
As they say, keep those requests coming. I respond to them all of course but a word of caution here is that so far I have experienced several have ‘bounced back!’. Hotmail accounts fair the worst I’m sad to say. Seems no Hotmail recipent has gone out and I’m not sure why that is?
So all I can say is that if you haven’t had a reply to your email to me within 24hours then chances are it’s bounced back and you should try again but next time give me an alternative email address that can receive it on your behalf (i.e. family, friend or neighbour).
Failing that of course send an A4 s.a.envelope to: –

Nope, you got me on that one too I’m afraid. 🙁
From the photo it looks nothing more than a cross between a vibrator and one of those Chinese made mains/continuity testers? So from a visual aspect at least whipping one of those out in front of a customer would gain a somewhat mixed reaction to say the least.
I probably would’nt go there Garn if I were you. But nonetheless I would be interested to know what types of various test gear you use? 🙂

Hey Paul: Where can I buy one of those?, if it can test everything it would save me a packet in test gear & the hassle of lugging it around 😆

Ah but do they work well? I want it to diagnose faults before I even see the appliance 😆 If you can find me 1 that can stop the customers Bitching about the cost of repairs, that would be even better. 😀

Got the pdf, many thanks Martin. Had a quick read; quite impressed. Good for being what it claims to be, clear, simple, “down to earth”. (Take it I’m not the only one who noticed that pun). As you said, there’s a lot more that can be said. As long as nobody takes it as completely sufficient in itself, then you should be safe against any claims against you 😆 .

Well, there’s a use for it after all. That impressive piece of equipment is none other than Doctor Who’s screwdriver….believe me, I know…..I’ve trodden on the damn thing barefoot so many times in my son’s bedroom.
Now I know this, I’ll put it away and keep it in good condition, so if my son wants to join the business it’ll save a packet on training. 😆Garn has to be jesting……….. :martin:

Please please do make sure you put the correct postage on your stamped addressed envelope. I’ve had 2 s.a.e’s sent me where I’ve had to pay the postman at the door the £1.08 handling charge for each AND had to pay more postage to send them on the you. :rolls:Sticking a 1st class stamp on an A4 envelope ain’t gonna work……:(
Come on guys give me a break here I’m many things but NOT a bl**dy charity. 8)
