KeymasterError code E1 on Hoover new wave plus 5 auto washer?
The machine in question is the Hoover New Wave plus 5 auto washer 1300 electronic
Can anyone tell me what the fault is with my washing machine? It appears to work normally up until the conditioner cycle when it invariably stops and displays E1 and all the lights flash. I have removed and cleaned the pressure (?) bottle and pipe to no effect. Fill level appears to be OK, water pressure is very good and I have tried reducing that also to no effect.
If swithched of at mains for a couple of minutes, it will normally run a spin cycle without problem – but NOT ALWAYS! Motor brushes are fine (almost new) so I assume that it must either be electronic or something to do with the pumping out of water, but that is just wild guessing. Does anyone have any idea or information to help,January 14, 2005 at 9:23 pm #123593clyde

E1 on hoover refers to it timing out when filling up, heating up or draining.
Have you checked the filter? a common cause for drain problems is coins getting stuck in the sump hose/ filter housing.
Pull the plug out 1st!

E1 is just a time out for either filling or draining. Check the water is draining out at a good rate (sometimes a coin makes its way right into the drain hose and acts like a flap valve there) and that it is filling fast enough too. (dont lower that pressure too much) you seemed to have covered most of the easier things this could be. The conditioner compartment has its own valve coil so this could also be the problem.
I am presuming this is the old Hoover New wave, need your model number for any further help. Before touching anything, pull the plug.

KeymasterHi Guys,
Thanks for the help so far, Have removed the drain pipe from drum and checked sump all clear also removed exit pipe from pump to drain, likewise. Question however, there appears to be no filter between the drum and pump, just the ball floating between two ‘rubber’ sections of pipe. Is this correct?
Have re-reun the machine and it gets to -1 and pumps for an eternity before failing again with the E1 message. Machine however doesn’t empty enough to open the door, is there anything else I should be checking? Is the pupm easy to remove and check?
Yep, definitely seems to be emptying cycle over-run that causes problem, have just run a 90 degree wash to prove heater working.
Any more help would be much appreciated, ThanksJanuary 16, 2005 at 3:48 pm #123596admin
KeymasterSorry forgot to mention Serial nos inside door.
there are two sets of numbers : 37613494
other set are in a box : A21327600066
I think the 0’s and 6’s are right they look very much the same!

Smileykeef,
Your pump is blocked….that’s all 🙂
Strip and clean the pump, refit it and BINGO!!!…end of problem 8)
Promise me first you will PULL THE PLUG though OK? :plug:

Cheers, its on a trial run now…will report success later!!
As for the plug..thanks for the tip, I wondered were the sparks were coming from! Joning aside, its common sense (unless the wifes doing it) ‘cus water and electric don’t mix.
Thanks for your help.

🙂 ykeef,
Check the water level control system – a partial blockage can cause the machine to THINK it’s full of water even when it’s empty. The collecting bell is on the front of the tank.Pull the plug first. :plug:

KeymasterHi Thanks for the info…
I have removed and cleaned the bottle and pipe previously, what I am now thinking is that I may have put it back with the small clear pipe pointing the wrong direction.
Can you advise if the pipe should come out the top, the bottom or side of bottle, as there seems to be no obvious “right” way up.
Have double checked the pump and all is fine there…if I can’t sort this soon looks like I have have to turn me pant inside out for tomorrow!smileykeef

Sorry ❗
I for one am totally confused as to your situation right now 😕
Now on the “bottle” question, you should fit it back into its tub hose fixing with the outlet pipe almost uppermost (or as near as damn it considering the limitations of space available!)
You have checked and taken the pump apart? Checked the sump hose and its ball-valve unit?….Bear with me on this……Is the drain hose connected to anything or will/can you see it clearly discharging into a sink/bowl/bucket or whatever when it drains???? Also…If you set it on a programme (say 4 for example) will it fill OK and STOP filling a short while later?
If the answer is YES! then please turn it off, set it to 10, hit START and tell me what happens…………………. 😯

OK, I’ve sat down, had a very strong black coffee and started again.
I have taken out the pump and taken it to pieces (again) made sure its clean and put it back together. Have removed the ‘sump hose’ from the bottom of tank and double checked there is no obstruction and the ball moves freely, there appears to be no filter of any kind…is this right?
I have again removed the collecting bell/plastic opaque bottle with the pipe that goes to the door mechanism and the pressure switch, I have checked that it is clean and the pipes are clear.
On refitting it I have found (which I didn’t before) that it does have a locating slot/groove which is at a different angle to what I have had previously.
I have set a #6 (her usual) program running before getting back to the computer. So you are clear what has been happening is that it will go through a program to point #6 then go -2 >-1 and fail on E1. If you then set #10 it will finish pumping and spin as normal.
Just for info it has not been running any program as far as to collect the conditioner, so I am assuming it is the level of water (indication to m/c) that is causing the problem. So far all I ‘ve got out of this is wet, a backache and the 20p I found in the sump the first time I took it to pieces!!
Thanks for all your help, here’s hoping….

KeymasterOK…it still comes up E1 error with water still in drum. If restarted on program 10 you can hear it pump out the water before a spin.
Any more ideas?

Yeah, the heater is faulty by the sounds of it, as suggested by Clyde, E1 can mean a time out error on filling, emptying or heating.

ParticipantBlockage in the drain hose itself perhaps? You should be able to blow through it easily. Is it coupled up under the sink – the spigots are so and soes for choking, especially the ones with the cross piece in.
Have you checked that the pressure switch is clicking? It’s a two level switch, so if you blow gently into the switch you should hear 2 clicks as it pressurises and 2 clicks as it decompresses.
Beyond that I suppose the only culprit left is the pump itself. Old/worn pumps can run slow and not clear the water efficiently. Is it one with a cooling fan or what is called a magnetic pump? The one with the fan should spin freely if the fan or impellor is turned by hand. A magnetic pump will resist and “ping” each 1/4 turn. If it is stiff or spinning free, it’s knackered.
There is no filter on these appliances.
Good luck,
