    Hi,
never had much to do with H/P twin tubs so,
spinner motor belt spins ok and the aluminium pulley spins but the large cast things ??? and the tub stay still. Did not delve further as I don’t know what it could need or if it’s obsolete or whether it can even be taken apart. An old couple in their late 70s so if I can help it would be nice. Either a fix or a new spinner.
    Thanks
    Rob

    could just be clutch shoes

if u undo the bolt and pull the bottom pulley off, ull see them

it was common way back then

    are they still available?

im sure old man jim will know

In stock at Connect. Won’t say price for fear of starting price discussion.
You probably don’t need them anyway, just blow out the dust (without breathing it) and work the old ones on their pins so they move freely. They have a tendency to get stiff to move and refuse to be thrown outwards by the centrifugal force.

and rough the edges up with a bit of emery paper, that helps

The spin turret has 2 bearings in it – a oilite phosphur bronze sleeve at the top and a ball bearing at the bottom. The carbon thrust spin seal used to leak and the water would seep into the top bearing rusting the shaft and causing it to seize.
The most common complaint was the motor drove the aluminium pulley but not the clutch drum. The clutch shoes would not grip and the spin can didn’t move. Traces of leaks in the top of the clutch drum are a dead giveaway. Parts required; new seal, spin turret and shaft kit………all obsolete I’m afraid.
The only thing you can do is to remove the bottom spin weight, drop the pulley off with the shoes and remove the drive pin and remove the clutch drum. The spin can will lift out of the top of the spindrier after removing the plastic trim around the can under the spin lid. Clean the shaft with emery paper and grease it liberally. Push some grease into the top bearing, clean the can seals mating surfaces and reassemble. It’ll run for a while; but no guarantees how long it will last. (although I did one over 2 years ago in Poole and it’s still OK).
Rob – if you need a 9404 twin tub for spares I know of one locally…….

    Hope that helps,

    Steve.

    Thanks Steve,
will look at it and decide then. It isn’t siezed and will turn freely so I might be lucky.

clean and grease shaft should do the trick but might need bottom bearing eay to fit

Rob, in case you haven’t done this job yet, (hurry up! we want to know what happens), you could have a look at the clutch shoes on Connect 5031680994926 which will show you what shape they are when new. That way you’ll know if the amount of wear is significant.

Use a junior hacksaw blade as a scraping tool to clean off and roughen up the shiny surface of clutch shoes.

Also roughen up the inside of the clutch pulley housing where the clutch shoes are thrown against. Make sure of course no grease or other contamination gets on any of the clutch parts.

    Right….
Went back and took off the bottom cast weight and then the ally pulley with the shoes and the clutch drum. No sign of a leak at all, just shiny shoes so roughed them up and cleaned the inside of the drum too. Put it back as it was and just the same, pulley spins but drum doesn’t.
    Three questions,
1, is there anything other than the shoes as I don’t see how they can grip enough to turn the drum or
2, what way should it spin? This goes anti clockwise as you look at the bottom so the shoes are trailing onto the drum and not pushed onto it to grip. Unless someone has looked at it before and they haven’t told me.
Has anyone a diagram of how this goes together.
3.I think the shoes are on the wrong way but not sure, can they be reversed?
    Rob
    Hope you can understand this
