Actually, if the instructions are followed then there’s no issue with a 30C wash, or there shouldn’t be. Temperature isn’t the only factor you know, use of the detergent is.

Constant low temp washes in very soft water areas such as the area I work in cause severe drum support damage even when the machines have been used exclusively with powder or tablets. ( Even Ariel) 😉
At the time the first ‘Turn to 30°’ boxes of Ariel appeared on the shelves I voiced my concerns, if they had added the maintenance wash advice on the packet then fine, but no, as long as they appear to be green then thats all that matters. 😥

Bloody hell Jim we’re agreeing on things. Seen to be green but not as green or should that be brown as in the gunge found when you take a drum out and find that lovely mixture of limescale and old powder mixed together and liberally plastered within the inner drum.
Ok being energy and enviromentally conscious. I make a point of showing customers the inside of the machine with drum out just so they can see what is in there in with their clothes. love to see the expressions on their facesMarch 2, 2007 at 1:09 am #206084iadom

Don’t get any limescale round here, the drum innards are usually coated with a thick orangy/grey slime, door seals go black , dispenser is full of black jelly like goo. 😥

That’s the point though Jim. The problem is that most people assume that they can simply use one program pretty much when there’s a load that should be used. Where the care labels followed correctly then using a 30C wash instead of a 40C one would make an insignificant difference.
Fact is that folks don’t do it correctly and then blame the machine or the detergent, more often than not simply carrying on as was despite being given proper advice.

hey this topic has been the answer to my prayers today! Got my dad round to have a look for all this and we found the concrete block had cracked!!!
Anyone know whether this can be repaired or replaced? We’ve tightened up the 3 blots on the top of it and its far less noisy than before, but there is a corner of it that is cracked and we’re not sure how long this will hold for.
Thanks!

Very often the outer drum mouldings that secure the counterweight bolts get damaged. If they are, then a new outer tub would be required and hardly an economical proposition. If they are intact and it’s just a new concrete weight you require then do please give us the full model number and serial number of your machine. 😉

thanks for your reply – are the counterweight bolts the things that hold the concrete block in place?
My machine is the Hotpoint Aquarius 1200, WF220. Is that enough info? I’m not sure where to find any other numbers out thanks 🙂

Hi All,
I found this thread as I’m having similar problems with my machine. When on spin, there is a loud metallic banging sound. I have removed the top of the machine and confirmed that the springs and concrete block are OK.
Here is a YouTube video of rotating the drop by hand and the noise that is made. It seems to help make it happen more often if I pull the drum towards me while spinning it.
You can hearing te banging louder towards the end of the video ~ 1:08 onwards

Any advice appreciated.

Could be a bra
Wire stuck behind drum. Couldn’t be sure thoughFebruary 2, 2014 at 7:04 pm #206092iadom

Could be a snapped drum support but TBH the bearings are rough on that as well. It may even have noisy motor bearings as well as the drum problem.
If you remove the belt and then spin the drum is it still as rough as that?February 3, 2014 at 9:24 am #206093napalmdaz

Most of that low level noise is coming from the motor bearings. Separate problem 😆
I’m in South Manchester and could really do with a ball park quote to help decide whether or not to get a new machine. The house is rented but we don’t really want to get the landlord involved as he’s a right grumpy old man!

If you remove the belt and then spin the drum is it still as rough as that?Is the drop support the metal star around the back of the drum? I checked this by looking down the back from the top, while spinning the drop by hand, and it didn’t seem fractured of cracked in anyway.

Drop support??? DRUM SUPPORT.
You cannot see the drum support unless you strip the machine down, that is the drum pulley you can see.
Regardless of what is loose inside the drum you have serious bearing problems, main bearings, motor bearings or possible both.
