ParticipantHi there,
Just started getting the 2nd and 4th light flashing shortly after beginning any cycle – even the soak (which i thought was a cold wash) – am i better getting Hotpoint Service to come and fix it or start changing parts?
I’ve read the control board and heater element are notorious on these machines – is there one that you’d change first or is there a way of testing either part? Is there a diagram of where these various parts are located in the machine?
thanks for your help,
john.

You can check the heater with a meggar or multimeter if you have one, plus the know how to use it. Heater is accessed from underneath after removing base plate.
No diagrams I’m afraid, but the heater is a tube type, about the same size as an emtpy toilet roll cardboad tube, fairly obvious when you have access to the base.
Heater needs checking for resistance/continuity and also earth leaks if it passes the other tests.
Be sure to remove the mains plug first if you intend to have a poke around.
If the heater is OK then the module is the likely culprit.

hi Jim,
thanks for the response. I’ve finally got round to getting the base off the washer and starting poking around.
I’ve put my meter (in beep mode) across the terminals of the heater element and get no beep, also in a resistance mode I get zero change on the screen – that’s pretty conclusive that it’s the heater element I guess?
can you advise of a source for such a spare part?
thanks for your help,
john.

You will find the hose clips to the heater difficult to remove and even harder to refit. Thin jubilee clips would make life easier. some of trade folks say that their local Vauxhall dealer sell just the right size of clip. Don’t be tempted to use plastic bags ties.

ok, thought it went well – replaced the heater element tonight and now when i run the washer the first led flashes and it sounds like the pump isn’t switching off….any ideas what to try next?

Open the patient up again and cure the leak you may have caused. 😉
Put some towels on the floor first to catch the water and carefully check your hose to heater connections.
The error message suggests the base is flooded.
Unless of course you have put the connections on the wrong terminals on the float switch.

hi, it would be wise tonight to, unplug, pull out & tilt back the machine to allow any of the leaking water to come out of the base, & the possibly wet motor time to dry, else you run the risk of that soaking in water & failing too

ok, all drained, mopped up….and leak isolated, what the heck is the trick to finding a leak in the bottom of dishwasher that’s only a few mm off the floor? Except fill it and tip to watch for the drip?
Anyhow, it appears to be between the two flanges of the drain pump and the sump in the washer. The assembly had a single self tapped screw which after removal allowed the twisting of the pump housing off the sump to allow clear access to the heating element.
What’s the best way to create a seal between the two surfaces? there’s an o-ring in there, that’s all i can see and the twist locks it only so far…?
thanks again!

it may be a bit late for you, but may help others, i do all work with the side panel off,Plug out of course, heater change, leak checks etc, no need to disturb either pump then

The pump O ring seal is normally OK if refitted correctly, it is possible to refit the pump without actually locking all three of the lugs into the sump housing correctly.
Yes I am speaking from experience. 😳
