If this red spot stat operates 10c higher, isn’t this closing the gap to the 180c safety, thererore making it more likely to trip? Doesn’t make any sense.

My understanding is the temperature is controled by the thermistor and the yellow (now red) stat is a safety cut out. I wasn’t aware of any other stat on the Hotpoint washer dryer.

Which washer dryer are we on about? For 10 years at least we’ve had a heater box with one operating stat and one safety cut-out on it. Or are we on about the Indesit derived stuff?

The latest Hotpoint washer dryers sold over last year or so I think. There is a thermister and a TOC (one-shot) stat controlling the drying. The Indesit’s are the same.

Andy is on about the new range of Hotpoint washer dryers which are a hybrid Hotpoint/Merloni machine. They should start to come out of the first year guarantee shortly. The cabinet, drum, door seal and pump are Hotpoint. The electronics and dryer box are Merloni 😕 The dryer box has a one shot thermostat instead of the thermal fuse which was always used by Merloni. This stat is actually fixed into the heater box from the inside so you have to strip the box and remove the element to change it. Presumably this is done so you will spot any blockages and clear them while you are on. The yellow spot stat was continually tripping and it didn’t take long before people found that if you scraped off the yellow paint you had a small hole and you could reset the stat with a paper clip. 😀 To cure the nuisance tripping the stat was upgraded to a red spot (without the convenience of a reset hole 😥 ) and they still suffer from nuisance tripping. They have now modified the heater box completely and done away with the filter which was mounted at the rear. Will wait and see what this works out like.

Spot on. I never found any blocked filters, or any reason for them tripping (out of at least a dozen I’ve looked at) although to be fair I only stripped 2 or 3, the rest I reset with a paper clip as they were first time trippers.
