    Evening all.

Long time member but very long time since I made an apprearance on the forums.

Hoping you good folk can help me out.

Mother-in-law has a Hotpoint FF710EX 50/50 fridge freezer, quite a few years old now but has been working perfectly up until a couple of weeks ago.

Fridge has stopped working but freezer continues to work perfectly, what should I be looking at / checking first ?

Your help and advice is much appreciated.

    Regards, Soulman.

    cant find this model

on a lot of later models the are self defrosting freezers this problem can be caused by ice blocked air ducts

try a total defrost, switch off, doors open for 2 days

also you say freezer is ok but have you checked temp as it should be -18 but could be -6 which would be dangerous

    Thanks for the reply.

On your advice I have today checked the freezer (With a digital food grade) thermometer and temperature was -21 so seems to be working fine.

Do you have any suggestions on what what should I be looking at / checking next ?

    Regards, Souman.

Ok, I’ve had the fridge / freezer unplugged with doors open for over Two days.
After a couple of hours switched back on (Following the first use instructions) it appears the freezer continues to work perfectly (-20) however the fridge is still not cooling (+18).
Please advise on what I should be looking at next.

at the back of the fridge is a damper unit
you need to find is and see if its open or closed + check the motor to see if the coil has gone

    Thanks Dave.
Can I assume that this damper lives behind what looks like a removable panel on the rear wall of the fridge compartment ?.

    Hi Dave.
I’ve located / removed the damper.
Looking at the part it seemed (To me) that this evidently controls cold air flow into the fridge compartment and thus the temperature.
Not having the relevant equipment with me I wasn’t able to test the motor but decided to run the machine without the damper fitted.
After 30 or so minutes the fridge temperature was down to 4.2 so would you agree Dave that it would seem that this is indeed the problem.

    well yes and no

the flap not opening is the problem but why its not opening is another problem
    poss reasons

1 the flap is faulty either the motor or gearing
2 the thermostat in the fridge thinks its already cool enough
3 the main board is faulty

    Thanks Dave.
I sort of expected that was exactly what you’d say. 🙁
Given the the same circumstances what would be your course of action ?
Your help and advice is much appreciated.

my first course af action would be to see if the motor coil was there or not. you need to use a multi meter and measure resistance

Also as a temp fix. if you can open the flap a small amount you can get the fridge to cool down. if is open too much things will freeze and too little it will be too warm
