The machine is around three years old. (Hotpoint WD420 washer/dryer).
Last week the heater in the dryer failed. The machine still worked ok.
I guessed this would be a thermostat or heat trip thingy problem so I took the lid off to have a look.
I thought it would be a good idea to remove and clean the aluminium airbox, as it would probably be full of fluff.
After cleaning the airbox and mesh condensor filter, I put everything back together and planned on coming here to order a stat.
Once everything was back together I powered on. The dryer fan spun up straight away, then three lights on the left of the machine started flashing and the power light was flashing, but twice as fast as the others.I had read earlier (on here) about a similar problem, and it was suggested that the PCB could have a welded relay. So I removed the PCB and tested the relays. All of them had open contacts.
So I’m left with a bum machine. Can anyone suggest any tests or remedies?
Is this machine worth repairing or should I bin it and get another?
I don’t really want to throw loadss of money at this one, prefering to put it towards a new one if needed.Help 😕

Wow, quick response. Thank you.
From top to bottom they are 1, 2 & 4.
In case you need them, the lights refer to:
(1=Drying high heat)
(2=Reduce creases)

Either the fan motor or the ntc device (sensor with the little connector block) is out of circuit.
Wiring to the ntc device in particular is very fragile.
Stay safe, power off when checking.

Yes and yes, but it’s not a common failure.
“NTC” is negative thermal co-efficient. The hotter the device gets, the lower the resistance. By comparing the resistance against a resistor array on the pcb, it is theoretically possible to get accurate temperature control.

Oh, one last thing (hopefully!). Do you have a part number for the ntc thingy and also the thermostat (assuming the other part is a thermostat rather than a thermal cut-out or similar!)?

NTC or thermistor is p/no 1604802.
Cut-out is p/no 1605160.Be advised that there have been several major revisions to the dryer assembly on these – I would find your date code and check with spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk before buying components.

It’s only me again!
Checked the connection on the gizmo you suggested and it was loose. Powered up the machine and now have a different error code!
The power light is flashing (fast) and light number 4 (Time Saver) is flashing.
Any idea what this error is?
Forgot to mention, every time the machine is powered on the dryer fan powers up! Runs for a minute or two then stops. Very strange. It does this no matter what setting is on the front of the machine.Is it time for me to get a really big hammer out? 🙂

Light number 4 flashing is supposed :rolls: to indicate a motor triac fault, could be main PCB, bad contacts, motor fault etc.
You do have five years parts guarantee on this machine, the Indesit Company will replace all parts for labour (£90.00) only, as long as your past handywork is not to obvious of course. 😉

Jim, what do you mean by ‘triac’?
Looks like it might have to be a callout 🙁
Everything seems to check out ok, apart from the motor not spinning up!
Can’t quite understand why this happened when I was only checking out the dryer not working, and that was just the cut-out thingy (and a build up of fluff around the element!).
I still have some hair left, so I’ll continue pulling that out until I run out of options 🙂
