ModeratorWas going to post this yesterday but feared it would be thought of as an April Fool but all the Hotpoint WF….range of washing machines (basicly look like WMA’s) now have welded tubs which means no more bearing changes. p/n 1605490 £132.12 complete tub ass.
On a different subject: if anyone has the new partfinder disc, look up Hotpoint washing machine WTV70P and see the picture 😆ironic really.

Looks like mass recycling from the Hotperloni group then!!

This explains Ray at TMS’s comments on Wednesday. He was expounding the fact that we’d never have to change a set of bearings on the new Hotpoint Range, according to his Hotpoint area rep.
Guess he only got told half the story.
Chris.

The only picture I found was after clicking on Handbook.
Surely you don’t mean ironic, but iron on it. 😆 😆
Looks like an ‘Easter Egg’ stuck in by a bored software compiler.

If that’s the price of the part then it will be cheaper for customers to get Hotpoint to do it within the first 5 years then after that they will almost certainly just buy a new machine. Bad news for us, bad news for the customer and above all, bad news for the planet. 👿

We’ve seen this here before with the post a few weeks ago about Indesit tubs being welded together now. As I said then, doesn’t this go completely against the WEEE regs that are due soon? Or are Merloni having a last big drive to sell as much cr*p as possible before these laws are brought in?
It’s not just the wanton waste of raw materials but the fuel, water, electricity and enviromental costs involved to transport, dismantle and recycle these machines that all appear to be irrelevant to them; when we could replace 2 bearings and a seal.
How can they make money from this if they further cheapen their already appalling offerings and have to keep repairing or replacing them under warranty? More and more customers are refusing to pay for the extended guarantees offered by the retailers ( especially the sheds). Customers are also being told by the media not to accept multiple repairs on ‘in guarantee’ machines, so more will have to be exchanged.
Warranty work eats into profits; there’s no question. So cheaper, more fallable machines = more warranty work on more machines = more engineers for more machines = more parts required = less profit. Subtract falling extended warranty revenue – it surely doesn’t add up. The parts Merloni fit under warranty still cost them money. And the mountains of scrapped parts…..
Where are the ‘green’ lobby, Greenpeace and ‘Friends of the Earth’? Too busy putting ‘Bad Vehicle Choice’ stickers on Range Rovers while lorries full of ‘Merloni Baloney’ drive past unnoticed, I shouldn’t wonder.
The public should be made aware of this practice; hopefully the WEEE charges they will have to pay every 14 months or so for Merloni machine disposal will change their minds. 👿
We all live in hope…… 🙄April 4, 2006 at 7:04 am #171862squadman

It sure does and that reflects in Indesits accounts of 2005. They’re offsetting that with an increase in volumes produced. As ‘high street’ sales are in the doldrums, I expect their first quarter 2006 accounts to reflect an overspend of staggering figures.
It would be interesting to know what their actual ‘percentage failure rate’ is overall? (another manufacturer claims just 4{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} will fail in the first year 😉 ) I am sure Indesit’s would be well into double figures and therefore costing them millions of euro’s each quarter?

W.E.E.E directive v’s Indesit?
Well their welded drum qualifies hands down and no mistake, making Indesit the leading company in dealing with this legislation:-

If you read that report again it only refers to waste generated at the Indesit factory and how they dispose / recycle their day to day waste like boxes, paper, manufacturing process waste and off-cuts etc. It does not IMO refer to the machines at ‘end of life’. The agency’s remit was only to advise on how to cut internal waste – because if they were to begin to tackle the real problem of Merloni’s output of cr*p, and the impact it will have on the enviroment it would be a different report altogether and they’d still be there!!
It’s time for the ‘feelgood’ reporting of government agencies was replaced by the truth, as it will surely emerge in the end. ( usually too late). But one thing is for sure, it will nearly always be the bleedin’ obvious. 🙄October 28, 2006 at 11:03 pm #171867kwatt

Now I can be very simplistic at times, perhaps even stating the obvious but…
What happens if/when the press find all this out? What happens if the manufacturers are seen to be, on the one hand fighting the WEEE Directive with some pretty valid points and, IMO, some hollow threats and yet contributing to their own situation? It could be argued that, in many ways, they have actually created the situation that they find themselves in for themselves couldn’t it?
Then, on top of which, were a member of the press to ask me, I would have no choice but to inform them of the high cost of spares, citing examples of over-priced spares from numerous manufacturers. In fact, most would be seen as being as guilty being as sin of ripping people off and of trying to construe their own replacement market.
Of course I’d be forced to mention sealed tubs as well as other unrepairable items which, basically, fly in the face of the spirit and ethics behind the WEEE Directive.
And yet, for some strange reason, they all appear to be resisting the introduction of that directive, I wonder why.
But there’s no way that UKW could ever have such a situation or opportunity presented to it.
Could it?

Don’t you think we have a duty to inform the public at large over these current manufacturing techniques and the inevitable environmental implications?
Another article in the “Advice & Help” section maybe, perhaps even explaining the WEEE directive and the effect on whitegoods as well? 🙂
My guess is aqualectric would like to contribute? 😉
Unsurprisingly UKW doesn’t come up on the subject using Google though it’s been discussed many times on here in the trade forums. :rolls:
