Caz,
Whilst the ‘Drum Lifters’ may be a little on the weak side, as long as you continue to wash your trainers in the machine, then I’m afraid they will keep breaking 🙁
For goodness sake and the sake of your machine, simply soak your trainers overnight in a bowl of warm water and a little detergent. In the morning, douse them in cold running water and hang out to dry…easy, less hastle & better results too 😉

We can make the manufacturers change this policy of cutting costs in production by not buying their machines in the first place, if they seem to have recurring problems. I renewed all my kitchen appliances at the same time 2 years ago, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, hob, oven, combination microwave, tumble dryer all Bosch and against my better judgement I bought a Hotpoint WMA 63 washer. I have had no problems with my Bosch appliances as you would expect after 2 years but have spent nearly £60 on nine drum lifters for my washer. Hotpoint do not seem to care when you tell them that you will not be buying any of their products again. If enough dissatisfied customers do the same, however, they will take notice. It would be interesting to know, exactly how many people have problems with drum lifters. I intend to write to watchdog about this.

ParticipantI agree with you Maxie, I would never buy Hotpoint again, as you can see from my first posting I had to have a new drum when my machine was only 13months old as the bearings had gone. When the engineer came from Hotpoint he wouldnt even pull the washing machine out from under the worktop, he asked me to do it – me a mere 5’and tiny, and he was a strapping 6footer. A neighbour had exactly the same problem with hers and had a new drum, so it wasnt a one off. That added to the lifter problem, which has been better since I was helped on this site, has made me decide, never again. I agree, when I have tried to contact Hotpoint by email, they just ignore me. It wouldnt have been too hard for them to give me the advice that I have had here. Im sure they have made a lot of money from the plastic lifters. Best of luck with watchdog!

ParticipantWell said, Maxie. The manufacturers take damn all notice of what the independent service industry say about their products (which is part of the reason that this site exists), so it comes down to the public voting with their feet to make a real difference.
It is to be hoped that some of these forums are read by the manufacturers and their representatives, and by the “dripping tap” method, some of these complaints will get acted upon.
Best regards,

One of the drum lifters on my WMA62 has just broken so I ordered a replacement (plus a spare) online for £7.95 each.
The machine comes with a 5 years free parts warranty on the condition the parts are installed by a Hotpoint engineer (£34.99 for a home visit and a minimum £54.99 labour charge!). They will not supply the parts for user installation.
I won’t be buying Hotpoint again.

Stuart,
You know, you have brought up an interesting point here in your case. Drum Lifter has broken, is fully covered by an ‘5 Year parts GUARANTEE’ and is easily fitted to a machine without the need for tools by anyone. So why, in the interest of good customer relations, didn’t Hotpoint apologise for the inconvenience and send you a replacement ‘free off charge’????
If they did, how would you feel about them and their product I wonder?

ParticipantIm fed up! I thought all may be well with my machine, but no! I havent washed any trainers, heavy washing, big loads (cos Im scared if I do, the lifters will break), they are clipped in properly, as instructed on this thread, but since my last post, unbelievably, 3 more lifters have broken! I really wish I had kept all the receipts for all the replacements I have ever bought. Its a joke, what a waste of money! As soon as I can afford it I will replace my machine. Can any of you people in the know recommend which would be the best one to buy? Im so fed up!

Sorry, I forgot the recommendation.
It really depends on your budget to be honest.
Miele would be most of our recommended purchase, expensive; yes, reliable; very.
Middle range, go for a Bosch/Siemens (same appliance, different badge) or a top end Zanussi/AEG (same appliance, different badge).
Dave.

ParticipantCould anyone tell me anything about LG machines. I have noted your recommended machines, I havent replaced my horrible hotpoint yet, but was out choosing yesterday and noticed LG do a washing machine that is direct drive and takes a big 7kg or 7.5kg load. I cant find a lot of information about their reliability, could any of you help me?

KeymasterI’ve been hearing a LOT about premature bearing failures on LG machines of late and on the strength of that I’d avoid it. 😕
However, besides that they seem okay.

I would stay clear of LG. They are rust buckets. If the machine workings last, the cabinet will rot. I service these machines and shudder when i get one. Parts are another issue. They can take weeks to get hold of. You have been warned if you should choose the LG.

I would agree totally with SpakyP. When bearings go in the direct drive machine it leaks into the motor and will take out the rotor windings.
The worst fault is the noise that they make and all the different things ones try’s to overcome them, and has been said many times on this site their technical help is appalling.Kirk

ParticipantI went out today and bought a Bosch! I hope that will be ok. It has metal paddles, and I took note of what Dave recommended before, and am glad I didnt get an LG after reading Kirk Sparky and Kwatts comments. I have written to Merloni about my Hotpoing and so far they havent got back to me. I am going to keep it in the garage, and asked if someone somewhere could have a look at it and tell me why it has been so much hassle.
I have even advised others in the washing machine shops, who I have seen deciding to buy a Hotpoint, not to do so. I would hate to think others could have the same hassle as me. Thank you all of you who have helped me, I really appreciate it. I will write in when I hear from Merloni. -
