ParticipantI am really upset with my hotpoint wma32 washing machine. The blue plastic lifters inside the drum keep coming out, the little clips on them break off. It does have a replacement drum, this didnt happen with the original drum. The bearings went on the original one, after 13 months, and hotpoint replaced it with a new one. This new one has a big problem. Its been in the machine for about 17 months and unbelievably, and I can imagine that you will think I am exagerating but I have replaced them 21 times, that is 7 whole sets! Sometimes they will just come loose and I can push them back in, others the clips are broken off. Im really fed up with it. I dont overload it, in fact Im nervous to put much more than four towels in at a time, and even then, the lifters will break off. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know why? Its driving me mad!

Hi Caz,
Just a thought to put forward to you when you replace the lifters. At the front of the drum (where the lifter will go) you will see a metal tab. This has to be lifted before putting the new lifters on. I raise the tab quite high so that when you put the new lifter on it cannot be pulled forward far enough for it to come loose. Hope this helpsSparkyp

Thank you, I will try that in just a mo. You may have stopped me going mad! I did ask in the repair shop if there was anything I had to do when putting them in, and the man said, no, just put them in the holes and push towards the back of the machine. If it works I will let you know, fingers crossed! Thanks again

ParticipantCaz,
There are early and late versions of the drum paddles, which do not fully interchange. If you have had a tank change, you will almost certainly now be on the LATE type paddles. If these are being replaced against the machine’s date code/serial numbers, you may well be getting the wrong ones!Even if you get the right ones, don’t wash your trainers in the machine!

Hi Caz,
You must have the right lifters because if you had the wrong ones you would not be able to fit them, they differ where the little clips that fit into the drum.(You would not be able to line them up)Sparkyp

I would say it’s gotta be the way they are fitted to be honest, or the way the machine is loaded.
I have a few customers who return for new lifters every few weeks, and others that buy only one and we never see them again (unless they get fed up and buy something else of course).

Just like to add here that there is now a version 3 lifter just to complicate things further.

…..or Horse Blankets………….The ‘Jodhpur luvvies’ over here know to their cost…or as one of my customer puts it…..”terribly beastly things those recalcitrant drum lifters, and a frightful bore, hey what?”

Participantwell, I did as sparkyp suggested, and they are still ok! I didnt clip them in as you said, so hopefully everything will be fine now, at least for a while. I have washed trainers, thats what started this in the first place – have to have smelly feet from now on!

ParticipantCollect all the family trainers once a month and stick them in’t “Bendix”at the launderette – thes machines will take it.
People don’t realise that through water absorbtion the weight of any given item increases by a factor of 6 (approx) in a wash. So, a 500g trainer now weighs 3kg and it gets dropped on a plastic paddle from a height of 2 feet – obvious what’s going to happen really. AND people save up ALL the trainers to “make up a load”…….
If you’ve got to do them in the washer, 1 pair of trainers, and a bunch of towels. These will act as shock absorbers, and will also give a better chance of the load evening out properly when the spin sequence is arrived at.
Best regards,

I have replaced the drum lifters on my Hotpoint WMA 63, three times in two years ie 3 sets. I contacted various suppliers of these spares and the general concensus was that they could not get enough of them as they were failing regularly. I contacted Hotpoint customer care with my concerns by e- mail, I am still waiting for a reply. I then phoned them and asked them if there was a problem with failure of these lifters, they denied that there was any problem, despite spares retailers telling a different story. To be honest Hotpoint did not want to know. When you look at the design and construction of these lifters you cannot fail to notice how flimsy they are, considering they are expected to agitate things like heavy wet denim, god knows how many times a cycle it is no surprise they fail. This must be a nice little earner for the manufacturer and the more cynical amongst us may even suspect they are designed to fail. The lifters used to be part of the drum moulding originally, why did they change this failure proof system. I intend that my next machine will be one of these eg Bosch

Plastic paddles were introduced to lower production costs, that’s it!
I have been told that they reduce the moulding cost from the drums as well as removing a little steel as well worth a pound or two, not much you may think, but when you churn out 100,000 a year saving a quid a unit is considerable. On top of which consumers have sought out cheaper and cheaper appliances therefore any saving to the manufacturer in production makes them look more competitive. So they all cut costs and corners where they can.

Then of course you get version 1 then 2 and now is there a version3?
Bet there not interchangeable….its brilliant designing to save money on production and create Service work and spare part revenue..hats off to the designers, well done chaps 😈

ParticipantIts me again. I know that I wasnt putting the lifters in properly, and now for the moment they seem ok. I do think a lot of people must be having trouble with them, as I have bought my supply from 3 different shops and each shop gave me the impression that they werent much cop. I asked one man why they kept snapping off, he said, cos they are crap!(His words, not mine).I did email hotpoint, but they never replied. Maybe I wasnt told how to fit them properly as I was such a good customer getting replacements. The next machine that I buy will definitely have metal lifters! Maybe plastic was used to cut costs, but it looks like hotpoint will lose some customers. Still, touch wood, all does seem fine – we do have smelly trainers, but nice clean clothes!
