ParticipantHello All,
So far this has been a good workhorse with only shocks and motor brushes required. WMA74P 23159832
However, I have now noticed the inner drum does not seem square to the plastic outer drum and by hand rotates out of square.
I can feel no movement in the inner drum in relation to the outer and all springs, shocks etc are still good.
Could something have got bent during operation (if that’s even possible or am I looking at a strip down, split drum and repair if parts are still available?
Many thanks for your input.
Jez

unfortunately your links are for your personal drive and needs password access
but
suspect drum spider failed not an unusual fail
https://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/05hp32- … spider-kit
this is the 30mm kit but beware there is also a 35mm one so you have to strip and check
if spider has failed bolts have to be drilled out and you would need to order new bolts as well

Hi Dave and thanks for the info.
Strange about the pics as link view is switched on in G drive for those two.
sounds like I have a fun time ahead.
Any suggestions on where to go for a strip down manual?
I’ve found a WMA32 series manual on t’interweb to read if that’s of any use?Regards
Jez

there is not one unless you utube it
but in a nutshell
top off
control panel off , take picture of wires and remove
undo clip round door rubber, and remove the front of it ( it can stay on drum)
remove kick strip
2 screws top 2 screw bottom then front panel lifts off
remove rear lower cover and remove hose from drum and pressure chamber connected to it
unbolt both concrete weights and remove
unplug wires from rear water valves, unclip pressure switch and pull off plastic tube
tilt machine backwards and at the bottom are 2 shock absorbers that are held on the drum with 2 barbed pins. find a 13mm ring spanner and push it over the pin at the back to unlatch the barb then while holding the spanner in position use pliers to work out the pins
put machine back level
remove metal cover at top where control panel fitted
unclip wiring harness and place on floor on right
cut the 2 cable ties as harness goes onto drum
undo 2 locking plates for the top of the springs
you can now lift drum out and place face down on floor
you can now remove the rest of the harness and unbolt motorafter that its a question of splitting the drum and inspecting
make sure all the wiring is clipped back securely in the same place and make sure it cant touch the concrete weight as they rub through
don’t think I have missed anything hopefully

you must have had a lot of easy ones some come out with blow lamps and easing fluid but in a lot of cases I find it easier to drill as I was snapping torx30 bits if only they used torx40 then they would com out a lot easier

Appreciate the input Dave and Kai.
I’ll need to take a butchers to see what size it is. Can you tell size without splitting the drum as like most, we can’t live without a machine for long?

not until you remove the pulley and see what size the rear bearing is
30 mm shaft uses 6205 and 6206 bearings larger one is the inner
35mm shaft uses 6206 and 6207 again larger on the inside
I still would say strip it first as things can go wrong
if front bearing has broken up you will have difficulty removing the outer ring of bearing
if again the front or rear bearing has jammed and started turning in the housing the rear drum half is scrap as wellif the front bearing has fallen to bits and the balls have escaped into the tube is can damage it beyond repair leading again to the rear half change
from the sound of it you should be lucky as it sounds like a spider failure but its not usable now so its makes no odds if you strip it. then if you fail or its worse than you thought its a no cost exercise
I would also suggest you check the shocks and brushes while your in there. they are not expensive parts but while its apart they are much easier to change

sounds like a plan Dave.
I would change the bearings anyway after potentially 15 years
Am i right in assuming the bearing cups are the same outer size its just the spider diameter thats different so if I got a spider kit with bearings I could get an order in now?
I did the brushes a couple of years ago and the shocks a bit before that. I have given the shocks a quick shove and they still feel ok compared to the knackered ones I replaced.
i
Have also found a youtube vid showing the order of things you described earlier. So in short I would get a spider kit, new attaching screws and a drum seal?
thanks, look like fun!

The 30mm and 35m bearing machines have different outer drum and drum spiders as well as bearings.

Copy that iadom, strip day tomorrow so I’ll find out then. Interested to see if my maintenance schedule is up to scratch when I split it all apart.
Cheers

Any ideas how to get out a seized in spider shaft to bearing?
Have used plus gas and wood with wacking but no good
Bolt sheared on removal so will need a new spider anyway and lots of pieces of metal have been coming out!
Thanks

can be fun
never had the bolt snap and that causes problems
my way of doing it after removing the bolt and yes bolt it coated in a glue to stop it coming loose so if you put too much pressure on it instead of working it back and forth it will snap
after bolt out I tap the hole to remove glue, find another bolt that will fit and a few heavy washers, tighten the bolt all the way home but not too tight. then using a 2ib lump hammer belt 7 shades out of if and yes some of them can be a real challenge. suggest first if the rear bearing is an enclosed type take off the out cover and punch through the balls to take off the inner cover then you can get your fluid down the shaft to the front one that causes this problemDave

Cheers Dave, realised about the loctite after, oh well.
Still, I persevered and it’s out!
Spider is fubared. Cracked with lumps of metal missing which found in the drain.
But, the inside of the drum is spotless, no mould which is good.
Is the hole at the back of the outer down from the bearing a tell tale for the water seal?
Time to get on with the next bit.February 4, 2018 at 3:56 pm #453599electrofix
ModeratorRe: Hotpoint WMA74 drum issue.
yes hole is a drain to let water out from behind seal
sound like your doing ok. who needs to go the gym to get fit heh !!
hope your front bearing is intact as it the most difficult to remove if its not
Dave
