A guy phones me tonight to look at his WF hotpoint. Belt in a bad way and came off.

He then rambles on ” If you think i’m going to pay you a bull**** call out charge to fix this there is no way” and then has the cheek to say ” Come tonight to fix because it will only take you a minute to fit the belt ” !

His idea is go to the house fit the belt and he’ll throw me a tenner and job done 😯 ..

What’s the best way to deal with him ignore him and don’t answer the phone tomorrow?, i’m too soft for confrontations like this and to be honest was speechless on the phone!. Was having a good day until this jerk called… 🙁

Sorry for the random post, had to rant…

There is a good chance the belt came off because the bearings are probibly shot. 😯

I would get him to spin the drum and see if it is ok without the belt on.
Then tell him it is BER if it is not o.k 😉

You are not a public servant and therefore retain the right to do as you want, if that means he pays a callout or goes somewhere else, so be it, let him.

Although if he has the cheek to state those comments, there is a good chance he’ll agree to your terms, you call and do work and he’ll refuse to pay you.

Walk away, tell him or ignore his calls, I would, for sure.

Its silly santa season, today I finished feeling guilty because its Christmas soon and parts are not available until after or calls cannot be booked until the 5th of January, we’re that busy !!!!!!!!!!!! 😈

My reply would have been “If you think I’m ever going to come to your house for any reason, think again!” at which point I would put the phone down.

Life’s too short to have to put up with these sort of idiots.

I’m with bagman only I’d be more polite…

If you know what’s wrong with it why do you need me to come round? And, if you don’t need me then you don’t have to pay my charges and everyone’s happy.

Then give him the numbers for Repaircare, DAG and 0800 and let him knock himself out. 😉

Customers like this are the best reason I can see for call out charges up front, over the phone 😡

Exactly. The general population contains a percentage of chancers like this guy. If you give in to them once they will continue to take the p*ss as I’ve learned from experience :rolls:

Yes, there’s no need for a slanging match. I’ve had that sort once or twice. As others have said, it’s best just not to attempt any kind of repair for people with that attitude. I would just say, “Sorry, I can’t help you, I suggest you try someone else.”
I sometimes get customers who say “Don’t make a special trip, just drop in when you’re passing.” I do just that but I still charge them the usual call-out charge. 😉

Re: How would you deal with a customer like this??

It’s a very good reason to have caller ID if you don’t already have it. I let my answerphone service take most of the strain. If it’s a witheld number I only answer if I’m expecting a call from a friend with such. I only answer unfamiliar numbers if I’m raring to do some work. I would not go near such a customer and my response would be exactly as Phidom’s.

As for giving him other numbers to call, I wouldn’t give him my worst enemy’s number.
Like Lee8 said, you’re not a public servant.
The biggest reason for being self-employed is because you’re the one who does the choosing. Don’t give an inch to anyone who tries to turn that round.

He was supposed to phone back tonight to see if i found a WF belt. I do have one but i told him last night i would have to look to see or maybe order one , to give me more time to see how to handle it. I did get 2 missed calls tonight but he then gave up. It’s unusual as those type of people usually ring ring ring and feckin ring with 20 missed calls within 15 minutes!

Further to his arrogance his wife was at home all day but he expected me to call only when he got home from his work at 9pm+. obviously he was afraid incase his wife would pay me fairly i’m guessing…
