I think it was a good interview 🙂

The guy that rang in made a point of quoting the ‘Certain Korean Manufacturer’ line which made me chuckle!

Mr Watt on the TV wearing big ear warmers in a garage on Watchdog next methinks! 😆

Just had another listen and that guy from the manufacturers assoc could be a politician with his evading the question asked and quoting “government stats” which are always true as we all know.

The average life for a washing machine was quoted as 7 years but this takes into account a lot of older machines which are bumping up the average.

Doesn’t help my customer today with a 3 year old Whirlpool 45cm d/w with a repair bill which would have exceded the purchase price. 👿

All the guy from the manufacturers association could do was drone on about how we could all save the planet by buying the latest appliances blah, blah blah :rolls: Totally predictable, but thats his job I guess.

Ken got a fair few useful points across but I think the MC should have allowed our guy a lot more airtime than he did, the other studio guest seemed to grab twice as much… and I wasn’t sure what the hell she was on about half the time to be honest 😯

Re: I May As Well Tell You All…

    Persactly Steve!

What Mr Herbison (who was a surprise to me) did was the usual and what I expect, throw out meaningless percentage figures and, like the manufacturers, fails to actually explain much of anything. You could tell he’s had media training as he kept wittering on about 10+M appliances over ten years old alluding to the notion that they’re all destroying the planet by sucking up electricity at a silly rate.

They will consume more juice, absolutely, no argument. But, in real terms is nothing like as bad as AMDEA et all like to make out.

And, trouble is, replacing them causes more environmental damage than just letting them run. Fact.

What AMDEA are after is a “cash for clunkers” scheme like they had in the States where the government chucks money at it to encourage people to swap out an old appliance for a new more energy efficient one. Great, but wouldn’t you be better spending that hunk of cash on finding better ways, more eco friendly on generating the power in the first place? Does it actually encourage early replacement?

    Hype and spin.

On his fridges the real numbers can be found HERE

And, that big graph that’s on the page, well that came from Transform, the very people that he trotted out and were supposed to prove his point. Turns out that, unless you read the data the way you WANT to read the data, it doesn’t really do that.

If you actually analyse any claim that’s made on energy consumption being reduced by XX{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}, I’ve yet to see one that actually stacks up under scrutiny.

Funnily enough, DEFRA, WRAP, EA, Eco3 and various other institutions that I’ve been in contact have the same opinion. Now, either we’re all really, really stupid and can’t see the wood for the trees or… 😉

BTW Ade, it was me that mentioned a certain Korean manufacturer. They say, our new washing machine saves **{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} energy bla, bla, bla…

    I say, prove it.

    They run for the hills.

    I know 🙂

It just made me chuckle as he made a ‘Point’ of repeating you regarding Korean Manufacturers and ‘Whatever they might be doing’ 8)

On the subject of energy saving or rather money saving I would advise everyone to go onto uswitch and get a better deal on energy supply.

I did and reduced my outgoings by £45 a month which is more than enough to cover the cost of running my inefficient old appliances.

    Great job Ken!
You had to struggle through listening to that boring old stuff from the callers about their old fridges and microwaves plus the distraction of the scarcely intelligible university woman and the sports and traffic news yet you managed to get in some solid points in a very calm, confident and measured way. Respect!
There were one or two helpful callers such as the guy who brought up MTBF. That helped me as a listener to get through the blah blah about “my old fridge” etc. and actually gain some insights from the programme. Dunno if they’re doing a podcast but I’ll be recording it to tape if not.

Re: I May As Well Tell You All…

Thanks guys, I was actually pretty nervous about it, live and all that. Plus, I’m not the greatest speaker in the world. :rolls:

There’s a funny little story about the MTBF guy.

I was getting escorted up to the studio and the nice lady warned me about that question, she reckoned I needed to prep for it and seemed a bit jittery over it. Probably thought it was beyond the scope or whatever.

She totally relaxed when I just smiled and said, “brilliant, that’s a great question”. 😉

Then the same nice lady for the BBC calls me up this afternoon and tells me that they don’t do that much on appliances but, if they do anything again they’re calling UKW first.

Result in some ways I guess.

    Yes well done Ken,
Interesting listening as it shows you can get your point over in such a manor that you do not seem loud and overbearing which you are obviously not.
Just goes to show those who shout the loudest and talk the most are often not the best informed.

Well done Ken . You come across to me as the only one who new what they were talking about.
I liked the part when deadly doug wanted to take issue with your comments on energy saving.
He soon went quite after you stated a few defra comments aswell.
    STRAIGHT BACK AT YOU DOUG.

Re: I May As Well Tell You All…

    well done Ken,
the fact that 15.4 million appliances iver 10 years old are still working is fine but thats bcause they were made over 10 years ago when the quality was far superioer to the machines manufactured today,
hebiston said all washing machines are now recycled this is not true, at my local waste transfer station they just end up with the rest of the general rubbish, and even if they were recycled can you recycle concrete weights.
the energy figures are the usual con they always claim to beusing less energy low temperature etc, the best way to save energy is dont use it.
