ParticipantWe have a had a problem for a while now with something occasionally tripping out the house fuses in the middle of the night. In the past it was not traceable as switching it back on the morning sorted it out.
Yesterday it happened again but this time the fuse box would not reset and by trial and error I have discovered the problem to be out Indesit D63 dish washer.
As soon as the dishwasher is powered on and running a program it triops everything out. If it is not running a program or is open then it powers up fine.
So far I have removed the timer, rewired the plug, changed the fuse, changed the plug and tried a different outlet socket.
So any clues to what might have gone wrong? Has the motor shorted out? Is it likely to be something serious?
Bearing in mind its age and cost of a similar replacement is it even worth contemplating a repair?
Cheers Steve

Steve,
Had similar problem with a Whirlpool dishwasher recently. Called an engineer out who diagnosed water was lodging in the base of the unit, had risen high enough to short the electrics in the machine hence trips main power fuse box. When switched-on, only the drain pump was running and this further confirmed his diagnosis. The level had fallen sufficiently in the 4-5 days between initial fault and engineers arrival to fall lower than the electric short-out point.
Engineer never did get back to me with a repair cost so I replaced with a cheap integrated unit from Comet (Proline) and paid £70 for the 5 year total cover warranty.
I am NOT technically knowledgeable – just a domestic user with similar experience to you.

The only way to determine the cause of the problem is to check all the components and wiring with suitable test equipment. The heating element is a common cause of earth leakage on Indesit appliances.

Thanks Jim
I suppose the big question is it worth getting someone out to check this out when I can get a replacement Indesit for under £200?

Why replace one pile of junk with another. :rolls: There are much better quality machines out there, you do have to pay a little more for them but it makes sound economic sense in the long run.
A new element is not that expensive so it may be worth getting it checked out.
Try the link at the bottom of this post if you do not have someone in mind.

The average white goods buyer is not an expert. The statement above is valid if you ARE an expert buyer.
How about the following advice…….. from a non-expert :
Buy a product with a credit card (you get section 75 credit act safeguards) and take out some warranty deal – 3 year OK 5 year probably better. If the unit fails in the 3-5 years it’s somebody else’s problem to fix.
The trick is to pay a reasonable amount for the 3-5 year cover.

thats all very well, but, why not pay for something that wont break rather than have to insure something that will need several repairs every year, how much do you loose in the long run?, days off for engineers visits, inconvenience, the real cheapies will be in pieces long before the 5 year policy expires

Many a true word, as they say. 😉
So there is your choice, take advice from a self confessed ‘non expert’ if you wish. :rolls:

You guys amaze me.
This site is supposed to offer advice not personal abuse. If you look back at my first post on this thread I was simply posting my similar experience but qualified my post by clearly stating I am not an expert.
My further suggestion as to buying an inexpensive replacement and taking out a warranty cover is again simply MY route – and a valid one.
hotpnt seems to want to have a pop at me – I’m unsure why. How can he be assured a cheapie really will break down several times a year. In the past I’ve had Bosch, Ariston, Indesit, LG and of course Whirlpool. Had a Samsung American style fridge/freezer as well (still have). All eventually cause problems of one sort or another – some sooner rather than later. In my opinion a Brand Name is no guarantee of absolute build quality. Many different overseas factories building the different models in a Brand’s portfolio, built on a Monday Morning – poor quality of sub components in a batch – any number of issues.
You can quarantee however that if you have a warranty cover you WILL get a repair/replacement during the period of cover.
So lighten-up guys. Remember, you repairers are likely to make more money if cheapies are purchased without cover 8)

Abuse, 😕 I can see no evidence of any abuse, personal or otherwise in this thread.
A healthy difference of opinions maybe, your self confessed ‘ non expert’ opinions against people with almost 40 years experience in the trade.
Strange as it may seem I for one do not enjoy repairing poor quality machines that have to be scrapped at 14 months old because there is a sock stuck in the completely sealed outer drum ( an Indesit BTW).
I do not want to complete a repair then have to do a Le Mans style departure, hoping to get to the end of the street before the machine breaks down again. 😥

8)Im not taking a ‘pop’, but in answer to your question as to how can i be assured of cheapie machines failing, well, many years of experience trying to patch up 2 year old cheap machines that are literally falling apart, as also mentioned by iadom. its not fun trying to fix something that you know is so badly built it will fail again soon

Participantoooh, haier… sends a shiver down my spine
cheap? better believe it!!! proline, haier, other random unheard of names, all cheap chinese tat
over a 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} failure rate would suggest hotpnts comments carry some weight

OK Guys thanks for this you all make good points.
So what kind of brands should I be looking at that are the better ones and how much more should I expect to pay to get the extra quality?
Just to put things into perspective the last two I’ve had were both Indesits the first lasted 9 years and the second 7 which I’m pretty happy with.
If you are going to be talking more than double the price of the indesit I’m going to take some convincing that I shouldn’t go down Mikes route and get another Indesit with a 5 year warranty.
Cheers Steve
